[Measuring nursing needs of older people related to actual nursing time in institutions for the aged (author's transl)].

A great many of the elderly people are in need of care. In offering services accordingly it is necessary to acquire relevant data. The following article gives results of a study which determined 1) the real amount of given nursing care and 2) the measured amount of nursing needs of these patients. The research was done at 10 nursing stations with 210 persons. The results make clear 1) that need of care must be seen in a multidemensional perspective and 2) that much of the psychological and social needs of the patients are not yet satisfied.

The influence of heparin and protamine sulfate on platelet ADP and platelet factor 4 release and the expression of glycoprotein IIb/IIIa.

We present results concerning the pathogenic mechanism of heparin-induced thrombocytopenia type I. An ELISA was developed for directly measuring the expression of glycoprotein IIb/IIIa (GPIIb/IIIa) on platelets in the presence and absence of ADP and under the influence of various heparins. In addition, the release of ADP and platelet factor 4 (PF4) was measured in platelet-rich plasma. Heparin also induced the expression of GPIIb/IIIa without prior stimulation with ADP. On the other hand we could demonstrate that the addition of heparins and protamine sulfate to platelets resulted in a significant release of intracellularly stored ADP and PF4. These results suggested that heparin(oid)s modulate the expression of GPIIb/IIIa with ADP as a mediator, and that protamine sulfate is contraindicated as an antidote in heparin-induced thrombocytopenia.

[Sociological aspects of widowhood].

The process to become a widow or a widower and the analysis of the social situation of widowed persons is getting an increasing attention in gerontology. Of special concern are older widows, who have quite a time to live. Hereby are their situation within their family-life cycle and the event of the spouse's death especially analyzed. The overtaking of the role as a widow is much dependent of capacities which are learned in an earlier life span. Many widows have problems in newly learning role elements which are traditional dominated by men. Concerning loneliness and social contacts of older widows, different studies show only few widows much lonely and an only small reduction of social contacts after becoming a widow.
