Streptozotocin-induced diabetes in the Chinese hamster. Biochemical and endocrine disorders.

Streptozotocin treatment (125 mg/kg) in the Chinese hamster induced hyperglycaemia, hypoinsulinaemia, hyperglucagonaemia and changes in body, liver, pancreas, stomach, kidney and adipose tissue weights. The pancreatic reserves of insulin and glucagon in the diabetic animals were low, but stomach glucagon high. These animals showed high levels of phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase and low levels of glucokinase, hexokinase, isocitrate dehydrogenase and malic enzyme, but normal levels of pyruvate kinase in the liver. Increases in lactate dehydrogenase subunit B and isozymes 2, 3 and 4 were also observed in the liver, but not in the epididymal fat pad, of the diabetic animals. N-Acetyl-beta-D-glucosaminidase was elevated in plasma, liver and heart, but not in the kidney of the treated animals. Renal alpha-galactosidase and beta-glucosidase were depressed, whereas beta-galactosidase and alpha-glucosidase remained essentially normal. These features indicated that there were considerable differences between the biochemical disorders associated with streptozotocin-diabetes in the Chinese hamster and the published observations in the rat.

Variance in LDH isozyme patterns in a Chinese hamster (Cricetulus griseus) colony.

1. LDH activity and isozyme pattern were examined in the liver and epididymal fat pad of animals in 12 different sublines of the Upjohn Chinese hamster colony, which was established to produce animals with spontaneous diabetes. 2. Considerable divergence was observed and the animals could be divided into 3 groups according to LDH-H activity. Each group was significantly different from the other in epididymal fat pad LDH-1, 2,3 and 5 and liver LDH-3, 4 and 5. 3. The variance in LDH isozyme pattern bore no relationship to the state of diabetes but appeared to arise from other genetic determinants. However, within a single subline, a significant correlation between blood sugar and epididymal fat pad LDH-5 was observed.

Helmets and head protection in CF ejections 1967-1973.

During the period 1967-1973, helmet retention and minor head injuries were significant problems in ejections from Canadian Forces (CF) aircraft. There were 73 ejections in which Canadian-designed helmets were worn. Eight-four percent of those who lost their helmets and 38% of those who retained their helmets received minor head injuries. This paper reports on analysis of helmet loss versus air speeed and Q force. Specific problems are addressed, including the fitting and method of wearing helmets, and some guidelines for enhancing helmet retention are recommended.

Anthrax epizootic in white-tailed deer.

Bacillus anthracis caused high mortality among white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) on Beulah Island, Desha County, Arkansas. Sixty-seven carcasses were located and the total loss was estimated between 200 and 300 deer. Range conditions indicated that the deer herd had greatly exceeded carrying capacity. Lesions in deer were similar to those ascribed to anthrax in domestic cattle, sheep, and goats.
