Antibody-coated bacteria in the urine of obstetrical patients with acute pyelonephritis.

The direct immunofluorescence method for the detection of antibody-coated bacteria in urine sediments was used to test urine samples from obstetrical patients with the clinical diagnosis of acute pyelonephritis or cystitis. Antibody-coated bacteria were present in the urine from 12 of 15 patients with acute pyelonephritis, but they were not observed in the urine from 13 patients with cystitis. The clases of antibody coating the bacteria were IgG, IgA, and, in some cases, IgM. A correlation between a high titer of antibody in serum and the presence of antibody-coated bacteria in the urine was noted. These results confirm that the immunofluorescence test can be useful, as previously reported, in distinguishing infection of the kidney from infection of the bladder.

Cancer of the colon during pregnancy. A review of the literature and report of a case associated with ulcerative colitis.

The first case of adenocarcinoma of the transverse colon and splenic flexture during pregnancy associated with ulcerative colitis is reported. The patient presented with perforation and widespread metastatic disease. After 10 years' duration of symptoms of ulcerative colitis, the risk of coexisting cancer of the colon is 3 to 5% each year. As ulcerative colitis frequently coexists with pregnancy, the obstetrician needs to be alert to the potential for malignant changes in these patients. With the addition of this patient, there are now 18 reported cases of cancer of the colon during pregnancy. These 18 cases are reviewed especially as to management, outcome of the pregnancy, and prognosis.

Viral replication in human ovarian cell culture.

A method is presented for the preparation and maintenance of human ovarian cell cultures. Sections of normal ovaries removed at surgery were minced, trypsinized, and seeded as cell cultures grown in minimal essential media at 37 C. Long-term, low-passage cultures were grown in quantities sufficient to permit viral studies. Ovarian cells, of passage 23, were challenged with 57 known viruses. Of these viruses, 52 (especially viruses of the picornavirus and adenovirus groups) produced typical cytopathic effects. The significance of these studies is discussed.

Stability of minute virus of mice to chemical and physical agents.

Minute virus of mice (MVM), a single-stranded deoxyribonucleic acid Parvovirus, was subjected to various inactivation procedures, including chemical disinfectants, heat, and ultraviolet radiation. MVM was found to be less stable than has been reported for other Parvoviruses. This virus was readily inactivated by a variety of chemical disinfectants, including alcohols, formaldehyde, glutaraldehyde, and chloroform. MVM was more sensitive to ultraviolet radiation than was Kilham's rat virus. MVM was more sensitive to heating at temperatures of 35 to 100 C than has been reported for other Parvoviruses. More than 95% of MVM infectivity was inactivated by heating (45, 60, or 100 C) for 60 min, acid (pH 2.0) treatment, or ultraviolet radiation treatment, although a small percentage (less than 2%) of the virus preparation was found to be resistant to these treatments. In addition, more than 99% of the infectivity of MVM was lost after storage at 4C for 10 weeks, although the virus was stable on storage in liquid nitrogen.
