Serum pyridoxal (vitamin B6) concentrations were measured in 50 patients with significant diabetic neuropathy. There were 24 males and 26 females with a mean age of 58.2 years and a mean duration of diabetes of 9.8 years. The level of pyridoxal was significantly lower in these patients when compared with randomly selected diabetic patients matched for age and sex without clinical evidence of neuropathy. There was no significant difference in the duration of the diabetes between the two groups. The results indicate an association between pyridoxal deficiency and neuropathy in diabetic patients.
Serum pyridoxal concentrations were estimated in 13 patients who had both diabetes and carpal tunnel syndrome. The clinical features and response to treatment in these patients did not differ from that seen in non-diabetic patients with this syndrome. No significant difference in mean serum pyridoxal concentrations was noted between diabetics with carpal tunnel syndrome, diabetics without neuropathy, and normal subjects. These results indicate that carpal tunnel syndrome in diabetics is distinct from polyneuropathy in that it is not associated with a reduction in serum pyridoxal levels which is a feature of diabetic polyneuropathy.
The mean glycosylated haemoglobin A1 level in 200 diabetics, 13.2%+/-2.6 (1SD), was nearly twice the level found in 100 non-diabetics, 7.42%+/-0.6 (1SD), and overlap between the two populations was minimal. Glycosylated haemoglobin A1 levels, fasting and two hour post-prandial blood glucose concentrations and 24 hour urinary glucose excretion were measured at intervals over a period of 12 weeks in six diabetics requiring stabilisation. A close correlation was found between glycosylated haemoglobin A1 levels and short term parameters of control.
Spiroplasmas were isolated and cultivated from nonsurface-sterilized petals and bracts excised from flowers of Liriodendron tulipifera L. (tulip tree) in Anne Arundel, Charles, and Prince George's Counties in Maryland, and East Lyme County, Connecticut. All isolates grew at 30 and at 37 degrees C. Morphology of colonies on solid agar (1%) medium containing serum differed among isolates: some isolates formed highly diffuse, barely visible colonies; others formed distinct colonies with granular centers surrounded by minute surface or submerged 'satellite' colonies. Cellular morphology and motility of organisms in broth and in agar culture were typical of the spiroplasmas pathogenic in plants and insects. In viscous media containing methylcellulose, spiroplasmas freely suspended in the medium swam, and organisms in contact with glass slide or coverslip "crawled" across the solid surface. Frowth inhibition, metabolic inhibition, and organism deformation tests failed to reveal a serologic relationship between spiroplasma strain 23-6 from tulip tree flowers and spiroplasma strain AS 576 from honey bee.

The effects of castration on male spawning behavior, nestbuilding and fertility were measured in a five day spawning trial with an intact female. Spawning and fertility decreased one week following castration while nestbuilding was unaffected. Sham operated males showed normal spawning and fertility. Two weeks postoperatively, fertility and spawning were increased paralleling partial regeneration of the testes. The antigonadotropin methallibure blocked testes regeneration and recovery of spawning in castrated males but it had no effect on reproductive functions of intact males. Spawning did not decrease in one-week castrated males which were administered testosterone enathanate. The results suggest that gonadal androgen facilitates sexual behavior in Macropodus.

Pasteuria ramosa, a bacterial parasite of the cladocerans Daphnia pulex and D. magna, was described by Metchnikoff in 1888. Because the organism could not be cultured, it was subsequently lost. However, the original illustrations and descriptions of the life cycle of P. ramosa are similar to a bacterial spore parasite of nematodes (BSPN) that was recently described in Meloidogyne. As a result of these similarities, a search for P. ramosa was initiated. An organism resembling P. ramosa was found infecting Moina rectirostris, a member of the Daphnidae and a new host for the bacterium. Photomicrographs and scanning electron micrographs of the parasite indicated that the morphology of this organism was similar to the descriptions and illustrations presented by Metchnikoff. Morphological features of this newly described parasite also indicated that the bacterium is similar to the BSPN.

Serum pyridoxal concentrations were measured in 63 children with diabetes mellitus and compared with those in healthy children of the same age. Twenty-four per cent of diabetic children had concentrations below the limit of normal for age and sex. Diabetic children, as a group, had lower serum pyridoxal concentrations than healthy children.

Abnormalities of tryptophan metabolism have been reported in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and it has been suggested that these abnormalities are the result of disordered vitamin B6 metabolism. Fasting serum pyridoxal, assayed by an automated microbiological system, was found to be below normal in 35 out of 42 patients with RA while a similar abnormality was found in 8 out of 35 patients with osteoarthrosis (OA). Within the RA group the abnormality could not be related to the age, sex, or drug therapy of individuals but of the 8 patients with OA and a low serum pyridoxal, 7 were receiving indomethacin either alone or in conjunction with aspirin.
