Sixty two children were included in a collaborative study to determine the prognosis for lupus nephritis. Renal involvement was confirmed by histologic study of renal biopsy specimens which were classified into five categories: minimal lesions (11 cases, 18%); focal segmental glomerulonephritis (15, 24%); diffuse proliferative glomerulonephritis (30, 48%); membranous nephropathy (5, 8%); and glomerular sclerosis (1,2%). That the predictive value of the early biopsy is limited was indicated by the most recent status of 37 patients five years after onset--total remission (13, 35%); urinary abnormalities or nephrotic syndrome (7, 19%); moderate renal failure (4, 11%); chronic renal failure (7, 19%); and hypertension (6, 16%). Treatment did not always prevent the development of severe renal failure; in particular, plasmapheresis failed to avert the death of one patient and the development of chronic renal failure in two others.
To know the intensity of liver enzyme induction during a treatment with anticonvulsant, the authors have measured gamma GT before and at the 7th, 30th, 60th days after a treatment by one of the 4 major anticonvulsant as phenobarbital, diphenylhydantoin, carbamazepine and sodium valproate. All alcoholic patients, and all the patients having a liver disease have been eliminated. The results show that diphenylhydantoin is the most important inductor of gamma GT with an elevation that can reach 312% of basal level, followed by phenobarbital, when sodium valproate and carbamazepine are the weakest inductors. More, induction by carbamazepine in women is more weak than in man. Age takes a place in intensity of induction with a major induction observed between 30 and 50 years old for phenobarbital, and above 50 years old for sodium valproate. These effects are not dependent of an hepatitis. The knowledge of the upper levels of gamma GT induction by anticonvulsant appear to us usefull for several reasons: carbamazepine and sodium valproate being the weakest inductors, they must be chosen in priority in women under contraceptive treatment. Any abnormal elevation of gamma GT need to look of an alcoholic intoxication, an hepatitis or a liver cancer.
The authors recall the possibility of a typical sciatica in multiple sclerosis and describe seven new cases. Their main clinical features are: early onset before any other signs of the disease, hyperalgic, paroxysmal, short, repetitive episodes, absence of mechanical or effort triggers, absence of improvement with rest or anti-inflammatory drugs, well defined course. The intra-medullar origin of these attacks is suggested by the clinical criteria and the aspect of evoked potentials of the lower limbs recorded in 2 of the 7 patients.
A behavioral profile of the ferret is presented for those who would like to use this animal in behavioral teratology and toxicology, or other disciplines involving behavior. We have reviewed neurobehavioral teratology of lisencephalic ferrets and neuropsychology of ferrets sustaining frontal lesions, as well as most of the studies of "normal" ferret behavior that have appeared in the research literature. Emphasis is placed on discussion of the tests used and how ferrets behaved on them. The behaviors discussed include spatial (maze) learning, delayed response, visual discrimination learning, discrimination learning sets, schedule maintained behavior, shock avoidance learning and spontaneously occurring behaviors, such as ambulation in open field, spontaneous alternation and species specific behaviors. Although the use of the ferret in behavioral experiments is not yet extensive and large gaps exist in our knowledge about the basic functional capacities of this animal, the ferret is unquestionably well suited for behavioral studies.
While there is well-known evidence for dopaminergic control over gonadotrophic and Prolactin functions, the way gamma-aminobutyric acid (Gaba) acts and the routes through which it acts are not so well known. Valproic acid stimulates cerebral Gabaergic tracts. It was therefore used by the authors to study first the basal levels of LH FSH and Prolactin and the way they reacted after two months treatment with this anti-convulsant. The authors noted a decrease of LH-RH stimulated LH and a decrease of the basal levels or Prolactin in TRH stimulated Prolactin. So Gaba can be a neuro-modulator of the hypothalamo-pituitary axis, acting synergically with the dopaminergic tracts to decrease Prolactin secretion but opposing the dopaminergic tracts in the control over LH.

A patient presented with disorders of saccadic and pursuit movements a wandering gaze, the impossibility to maintain fixation, a concentric shortening of visual attention mainly of the right side, an incomplete right homonymous hemianopia (respecting 10 to 20 degrees), and optical and auditory ataxia predominantly affecting the right hand. Pathology showed a large left parietal glioma in the white matter in the superior and inferior parietal lobes, with microscopic evidence of parietal cortex invasion. A hematoma on the right side was situated entirely parasagitally in the precuneus, approaching the cortex at this level. The two lesions were independent and the splenium was intact. The frontal lobes were normal. A review of nearly 30 cases of bilateral syndrome of the parieto-occipital junction showed that anomalies of visually guided ocular movements were always present. These cases require differentiation from those, such as the present case, which involve mainly a visuomotor coordination disorder and from those with predominant visual disorientation.
The authors report the data of the analysis in cephalo-rachidial fluid during 162 sciaticas. 52,5% cases have a normal albuminorachidia. There is a correlation between the clinical findings bur none with the evolution before punction and the albuminorachia. When it is found more than 0,40 g/l there are abnormalities on the myelographic-examination and the patients are more often operated on. In fact the analysis of the cephalo-rachidial fluid is not very useful in common sciaticas. It is necessary to follow up cases where more than five cells (by mm3) are found because they might become multiple sclerosis (3 cases one year later). A determination of the beta-2-microglobulin was performed because it is an excellent criteria of inflammation, in the cephalo-rachidial fluid. During sciatica its level is regularly normal (24 normal over 30); but is may increase in other pathological situations which, at the beginning, look like sciaticas.
From 3 cases reports, the authors emphasize the importance of acute confusional migraine in childhood. It is more frequent than in adulthood and it is often the presenting problem making the diagnosis more difficult.

The authors report 2 cases of stroke in 2 young women using oral contraception with production of anti-ethinyl-oestradiol antibodies. From literature, they recall the mechanisms of production of theses antibodies, their frequence in women with and without stroke and the different hypothesis lied to their pathogen action.
