Enzyme variability in natural populations of Daphnia magna. IV. Ecological differentiation and frequency changes of genotypes at Audley End.

Genotypic frequencies were analysed for two years in a permanent population of the cladoceran crustacean, Daphnia magna, which was polymorphic for an esterase and for malate dehydrogenase. Large temporal changes in genotypic frequencies occurred at both loci. There was no evidence of a seasonal pattern in the frequency changes. In most samples, genotypes at the two enzyme loci were non-randomly associated; these associations showed temporal changes. On some occasions marked spatial heterogeneity in genotypic frequencies existed within the population. Genotypic differences in parthenogenetic and sexual egg production were observed. In a primarily parthenogenetically reproducing population, non-random associations between genotypes of structural and regulatory loci will be the rule. The allozyme variants themselves may or may not be under selection. The relevance of these observations to ecological studies on Daphnia is considered.

Dermatologists in the United States, 1968 through 1973.

From 1968 to 1973, the number of dermatologists in the United States per 100,000 population gradually increased from 1.6 to 1.8, with the West and Northeast regions showing relatively higher rates and the South and North Central regions showing relatively lower rates. The variation in rate, considered by geographic divisions, can be analyzed to identify areas in the United States that may be in need of additional dermatologists. Given the current number of dermatologists being certified by the American Board of Dermatology and given the current death rate, there appear to be a sufficient number of dermatologists to ensure future growth.

Inheritance during parthenogenesis in Daphnia magna.

Natural populations of Daphnia magna have been found which are polymorphic for electrophoretic variants of supernatant malic dehydrogenase, esterase, and alkaline phosphatase. Using these enzyme variants as genetic markers it has been possible to demonstrate the absence of recombination during parthenogenetic reproduction. Genetic uniformity is expected within parthenogenetic clones derived from a single female.

Enhanced sandfly attraction to Leishmania-infected hosts.

We report that hamsters infected with Leishmania infantum are more attractive to female sandflies in bioassays. Entrained odours from infected animals were shown by gas chromatography to contain peaks absent from uninfected individuals. Implications of enhanced transmission, potential for developing novel diagnoses and the significance to epidemiological models are discussed.

Posterior spiracles of fourth instar larvae of four species of phlebotomine sand flies (Diptera: Psychodidae) under scanning electron microscopy.

In the present study, posterior spiracles of laboratory-reared fourth instar larvae of Lutzomyia longipalpis, L. migonei, L. lenti, and L. whitmani (Diptera: Psychodidae) of the State of Ceará, Brazil, were examined under scanning electron microscopy. The number of papillae of spiracles examined varied according to the species examined, but no intraspecific differences were found. The importance of this structure to sand fly larva identification and phylogeny is commented.
