Studies in cerebrospinal acid base values in intensive care patients.

CSF acid base homeostasis was studied in 22 patients in an Intensive Care Unit, to ascertain whether an assessment of this parameter was of any prognostic value. The only significant findings were a lower CSF bicarbonate concentration in those patients who demised, as well as a poor correlation between CSF pH and both CSF PCO2 and bicarbonate. It was concluded that an assessment of CSF acid base balance was of no prognostic value in this particular group of patients.

The management of septic abortion in an intensive care unit.

The value of ICU treatment in the management of septic abortion has been assessed. Of patients subjected to hysterectomy, the mortality is now 20%, as opposed to 37% prior to the advent of ICU. It would therefore appear that these patients can benefit from intensive nursing and medical attention.

Organic acidaemia in intensive care unit patients.

Forty ICU patients were studied as to the prevalence and importance of organic acidaemia. It was observed that organic acidaemia was extremely common, secondly that a persistence of such an acidaemia heralded a poor prognosis and finally that the acidaemia rarely needed treatment in its own right.

The use of AH8165 for Caesarian section.

The use of AH8165, a new non-depolarising relaxant, for Caesarian section is reported. The rapidity of action and the absence of significant placental transfer of the drug were confirmed. AH8165 has a definite place in obstetric anaesthesia.

Shifting pleural effusions.

The patient's position in bed may cause repositioning of free pleural fluid, which can track to paravertebral, subpulmonary, and paramediastinal planes. Awareness of this situation aids the clinician's recognition of the nature of the lesion on chest roentgenograms.
