Grass roots participation in health care reform.

Concerned citizens have responded to the health care crisis by developing the health decisions movement. American Health Decisions, a national consortium of 21 state organizations, leads a grass roots discussion network of community meetings committed to education and consensus on the ethical, technologic, legal, and economic issues (the tough issues) of health policy. The movement (with its stages of development, structure, process, and accomplishments) is described, and potential roles for physician cooperation and participation in forging functional, community-based health policy are delineated.

Are dermatologists greedy?

Are dermatologists greedy? A better question: are doctors greedy? The most relevant question is this: why is the subject of physician greed ignored by organized medicine? Certainly, the public talks about physician greed. "Fraud and Abuse Are Milking Medicare" runs the headline in a recent magazine article that featured the subtitle, "Dermatologists Removes a Simple Growth and Bills for Multiple Growths." The question remains: why, despite the present uproar over escalating medical care costs, does the medical profession fail to engage the issue of inappropriate reimbursement? This article explores some of the reasons and possible remedies for our diffidence.

Academic sanction. Targeting South African science.

Academic sanction, the intentional denial of scholarly exchange for political reasons, presents grave practical and moral problems to the open pursuit of medical science. The focus of this article targets South African science. However, examples of academic sanction in Western Europe, the United States, the Soviet Union, China, Japan, and other areas are given to support the existence of discriminatory restrictions against scientists. Examples and reasons also are offered for and against academic sanction, with the recommendation that academic sanction be pursued only with judgment informed by factual knowledge as well as moral, ethical, and compassionate values.
