The effect of parity on placental weight and birth weight: interaction with placental alkaline phosphatase polymorphism.

The effect of parity on placental weight and birth weight is examined through a series of birth records from an Indian population in Calcutta. Placental weight and birth weight increase with parity, the maximum increment occurring between parities 1 and 2. This is compatible with a hypothesis of sensitization of the mother to foetal, paternally derived, antigens. The three common placental alkaline phosphatase enzymic genotypes have no effect on determining foetal development.

Genetics of acheiropodia ("The handless and footless families of Brazil"): IV. Sex ratio, consanguinity and birth order.

The sex ratio among acheiropods is shown to be not significantly different from the sex ratio among their normal sibs, as well as among other segments of the family (parental sibships, cousin sibships and other sibships). The frequency of consanguineous marriages among the parents of acheiropods (82%) is one of the highest thus far reported among parents of individuals affected with rare autosomal recessive anomalies or diseases. No evidence was found of any overall positive or negative birth order effect on the incidence of acheiropodia. These results further strengthen the hypothesis of a simple genetic mechanism for acheiropodia, namely autosomal recessive inheritance, without any detectable complication as regards sex ratio, consanguinity and birth order. Although the family size from heterozygous parents (producing at least one acheiropod) was twice as large as family sizes in other segments of the families (8 against 4), we have at present no evidence to support either heterozygous advantage or reproductive compensation.

Proportion with low birth weight infants in an Indian population and its relationship with maternal age and parity.

The overall proportion of low birth weight infants is found to be relatively higher in the Indian population. Data collected from two hospitals in Calcutta, India indicate that although the proportion of infants weighing less than 2,001 g is approximately 10%, the dependence of this proportion on maternal age and parity is similar to the studies conducted elsewhere, suggesting a definite biological significance of the phenomenon. The proportion of low birth weight infants is found to be the greatest for the first and late pregnancies, the minimum being at the third birth rank. Young mothers showed a tendency to have an increasing proportion of low birth weight infants with increasing birth order; whereas for older mothers a general U-shaped dependence of the proportion on parity is suggest from the analysis.

Genetic distance analysis of twenty-two South American Indian populations.

Extent of genic variability among 22 tribal groups of South American Indians in terms of net codon differences per locus has been studied on the basis of determinations on ten genetic systems. The possibility of more than one (other than the north-south route, considered by others) migrational pattern is discussed in the light of the existing genetic variability among the Andean highland and the jungle populations. Genic similarities (as measured by gene identity) are related with geographic proximities which reflect the importance of random genetic drift in creating the present genic divergence among these population groups. Although the materials used in this paper form probably only a non-random sample of structural genome, intralocus variance (sampling) is found to contribute only a little in the variabilities of heterozygosity or genetic distance.

Blood group genetics of some caste groups of Southern 24 Parganas, West Bengal.

Five caste groups (Hindu) and a Muslim population from southern West Bengal are studied for the seven blood group systems, i.e., A1A2BO, MNS, Rh, Kell, Duffy P and Lewis. Cate heterogeneity was found to be statistically insignificant. The two religion groups are also shown to be genetically similar to each other with respect to these blood group loci.

Consanguinity and demography in some Chilean populations.

Spatial and temporal changes in the rates and the patterns of consanguinity are studied in some (indigenous as well as admixed) populations of Chile. Relationship between the variation of infant mortality and late fetal death rates with the degree of inbreeding is also explored. The need of a temporal study of these demographic variables is also emphasized to elucidate the influence of marriage structure or determined reproductive patterns on the genetic and demographic aspects within these populations.
