Movement to the xylem exudate of rubidium accumulated in the apex of corn roots.

Apical segments of roots of corn (Zea mays, L.) were excised and mounted in experimental salt solutions containing (86)RbCl and CaCl(2). Xylem exudates were collected hourly beginning at the 21st hour. At the 24th hour, experimental solutions were replaced with solutions of other chlorides (nonlabeled) of Ca(2+) +/- some monovalent cation.Following replacement of the labeled solutions, the rate of (86)Rb(+) release to the exudates from root segments declined by about the same proportional amount regardless of the initial steady-state output rate or the kinds of salts used to replace the RbCl. The content of (86)Rb(+) in the roots also declined with time, but to a relatively less degree. Loss of accumulated (86)Rb(+) to the various external solutions following replacement was less than 6% in 6 hours. It is concluded that movement of accumulated Rb(+) to the exudate is dependent on the concentration of Rb(+) in the root but is largely independent of exchange between accumulated ions and other ions in transit across the root.

Oxygen binding of fetal and adult bovine hemoglobin in the presence of organic phosphates and uric acid riboside.

The P50 values of "stripped" fetal and adult bovine hemoglobin were 18.4 and 28.9 respectively. Neither the oxygen-hemoglobin dissociation curve nor the Hill coefficient, n, of fetal or adult bovine hemoglobin was affected by uric acid riboside (UAR), 2,3-diphosphoglyceric acid (2,3-DPG), adenosine triphosphate (ATP), or inositol pentaphosphate (IPP). Combinations of UAR and ATP with adult bovine hemoglobin or 2,3-DPG and ATP with fetal hemoglobin also had no effect. It was concluded that neither adult nor fetal bovine red cells contained an identifiable compound which affects the binding of oxygen to hemoglobin.

Effect of an elemental diet on body composition. A comparison with intravenous nutrition.

Measurements of changes in body fat, protein, and water were carried out on two comparable groups of 14 ill surgical patients each over 2-wk period during which one group received an elemental diet (nonprotein energy source was 67% carbohydrate and 33% fat) and the other a course of intravenous nutrition (nonprotein energy source was 100% carbohydrate). The patients fed with the elemental diet had no significant changes in body weight, fat, protein, water, or plasma proteins over the study period, and although the patients fed intravenously also had no changes in body protein or plasma proteins, there was an average gain of 3.2 kg of body weight. This weight gain was mainly extracellular water. It is concluded that the administration of the elemental diet by continuous infusion was comparable to intravenous nutrition in maintaining body protein in these very ill patients and had the advantage of being cheaper and easier to manage. The problem of extracellular water accumulation seen in the patients fed intravenously was not present in the patients who received the elemental diet.

Blepharoplasty: when to combine it with brow, temple, or coronal lift.

Some patients coming for esthetic blepharoplasty should have one of three supplemental procedures performed to elevate or change the position of the eyebrows. The most precise eyebrow alterations are effected with brow lifting procedures, but these may produce adverse scarring. The temple lift may be employed to draw the lateral part of the eyebrow upward and laterally. Drooping of the central part of the eyebrow requires a frontal or coronal lift or an eyebrow lift. Additional guides to the selection and combination of the procedures are provided.

Comparison of the job attitudes and interest patterns of air traffic and airway facility personnel.

Air traffic control specialists (ATCSs) and airway facility technicians (AFTs) were compared on measures of job attitudes and interests. A total of 792 ATCs and 2,366 AFTs completed the Strong Vocational Interest Blank (SVIB) and questionnaires concerning job satisfaction and job attitudes. Both groups indicated high overall job satisfaction and general agreement about areas of job satisfaction and dissatisfaction. However, ATCSs. On the SVIB, ATCSs had higher scores than AFTs on scales concerned with interpersonally oriented vocations (e. g. social service, sales) and lower scores on technical-scientific occupational scales. The findings suggest that these two employee groups have many common attitudes toward work while at the same time having certain discriminable characteristics that have implications for both personnel and motivational programs.

Schizophrenic symptoms improve with apomorphine.

Eighteen chronic schizophrenic patients received subcutaneous doses of apomorphine, a dopamine receptor agonist, and of placebo in separate trials. A significant improvement in psychotic symptoms occurred after apomorphine compared to placebo. The results are interpreted as a consequence of presynaptic dopamine receptor activation by apomorphine with a subsequent decrease in dopamine-mediated neural transmission.

beta-thromboglobulin and deep vein thrombosis.

The measurement of plasma beta-thromboglobulin as a potential diagnostic test for venous thrombosis has been investigated in 16 normal volunteers, 24 patients presenting with deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or pulmonary embolism and 46 patients screened by 125I fibrinogen test (IFT) for post-operative DVT. The normal mean was 33 ng/ml (range 15-117 ng/ml). Of the 24 patients with clinical thrombotic disease 22 presented with DVT confirmed by phlebogram or IFT and 2 presented with embolism confirmed by lung scan. At the time of first presentation 12 out of 24 had betaTG values greater than 70 ng/ml. All except 3 of this group of 24 patients had values of greater than 70 ng/ml at some stage during a subsequent week of daily sampling. DVT was detected in 13 out of 46 screened post-operative patients. There was a rise om betaTG observed within 24 hr of the IFT becoming positive but the mean rise did not reach significance at the 5% level. An association between DVT and high betaTG values has been confirmed. However, its clinical value cannot yet be fully elucidated until factors, probably related to blood sampling and clearance, are further investigated.

Dextran and intermittent pneumatic compression in prevention of postoperative deep vein thrombosis: multiunit trial.

Seven general surgical units co-operated in a clinical trial of dextran 70 and pneumatic calf compression alone and in combination in the preventing of 125I-fibrinogen-detectable deep vein thrombosis in 305 patients. Both dextran regimens were significantly more effective than pneumatic compression alone. Pulmonary embolism was diagnosed in 14 patients, but there was no significant difference in incidence among the three treatment groups. In patients receiving dextran there was no greater median operative blood loss but there was a significantly greater incidence of postoperative bleeding complications.

Nasal tip projection changes related to cheeks and lip.

Nasal profiles are altered in almost every rhinoplasty operation. Often neglected in diagnosis and surgery are alterations in profiles of the cheeks and upper lip that should be made at the same time. We show aesthetic effects produced by alterations in these structures and describe how we measure and record the adjustment. A few examples of results are presented to indicate the techniques used and the importance of including changes in profiles of the cheeks and upper lip in cosmetic rhinoplastic diagnosis and treatment.

The thirty degree transposition flap.

The rhomboid and other 60 degrees transposition flaps have theoretical and practical disadvantages for many applications. A better flap for these is one having an angulation of 30 degrees at its distal end. When this 30 degrees flap is combined with the M-plasty, a versatile and cosmetically favorable repair is provided for many surface defects. In fact, over the years, it has become our most useful method of closure with flaps. Fundamentally, it allows sharing of tensions of closure better than does the rhomboid flap, produces less level disparities or protrusions than does any 60 degrees flap, and its resulting scar length is only fractionally longer than that of the rhomboid flap. Rhomboid and other 60 degrees angle flaps have been exceedingly valuable tools to many surgeons; the 30 degrees flap combined with M-plasty should be significantly more useful.

A flap suspension technique in blepharoplasty on lower lids.

Blepharoplasty on lower lids frequently results in a downward pull on the free border of the lid and inferomedially on the lateral canthus. Extending the incision in the lower lid upward and lateral to the outer canthus allows most of the excision to occur laterally. Closure then pulls superolaterally, which tends to prevent the commonest complications of blepharoplasty on lower lids.

Cosmetic principles in surgery on the face.

Excisions from the face are performed to cure diseases and to remove blemishes. Satisfactory cosmetic appearances can be achieved in most cases, even when large defects result from the excisions, if the surgeon employs cosmetic surgical principles and techniques in the repairs. Some esthetic concepts and artful methods are presented to illustrate this feasibility.
