Translational diffusion of liquids at surface of microporous materials: new theoretical analysis of field cycling magnetic relaxation measurements.

1H spin-lattice relaxation rates of several aprotic polar liquids on calibrated microporous chromatographic glass beads that have paramagnetic ion impurities are recorded over magnetic field strengths using a field-switched magnetic relaxation dispersion spectrometer. The typical bilogarithmic magnetic field dependence of these rates supports quantitatively our theory of nuclear paramagnetic relaxation and gives the translational diffusion at the surface of nanopores. Our results demonstrate that magnetic relaxation dispersion at low magnetic field strengths in high surface area heterogeneous systems may be quantitatively understood in terms of the parameters of the spatial confinement and the local translational dynamics.

Entry into community-based nursing practice: perceptions of prospective employers.

To better prepare new graduates for entry-level positions in community settings, faculty of one college of nursing gathered information using focus groups of prospective employers. The groups were to identify the skills and qualities nurses need to practice in the community and ways to redesign nursing curricula to better prepare undergraduates for community-based practice. Data for this qualitative study were collected in five separate focus groups conducted with prospective employers (N = 18) from four major areas of Kentucky. By collaborating with prospective employers in the community, a partnership was established between nurse educators and community health leaders to improve the marketability of baccalaureate graduates. Assessment was the most frequently named skill essential to nursing practice in the community. Independence, critical thinking, collaboration, and confidence consistently emerged as important skills and qualities. Prospective employers were positive about developing partnerships to improve under-graduate nursing curricula. Recommendations for curricula to better prepare undergraduates for community-based practice are suggested.

Use of a protocol to minimize hypersensitivity reactions with asparaginase administration.

Several antineoplastic drugs in clinical use may cause hypersensitivity reactions (HSRs) that range from an occasional individual reaction to a significant HSR. Asparaginase preparations have a high incidence of invoking HSRs. The use of an HSR protocol may minimize symptoms experienced by the patient and ensure rapid implementation of life-saving measures when reactions occur. The article will define HSRs, review occurrences, and include a protocol developed to minimize reactions to asparaginase preparations.

A cluster of Escherichia coli O157:H7 infections with the hemolytic-uremic syndrome and death in California. A mandate for improved surveillance.

In mid-January 1993, an outbreak of Escherichia coli O157:H7 infections associated with eating hamburger patties at a fast-food restaurant chain (chain A) was reported in Washington State. From mid-December to mid-January, 9 cases of E coli O157:H7-associated bloody diarrhea and the hemolytic-uremic syndrome had been reported in San Diego County, California. A total of 34 persons had bloody diarrhea, the hemolytic-uremic syndrome, or E coli O157:H7 organisms isolated from stool during the period November 15, 1992, through January 31, 1993. Organisms of E coli O157:H7 identified from 6 persons were indistinguishable from those of the Washington outbreak strain. Illness was associated with eating at chain A restaurants in San Diego (odds ratio, 13; 95% confidence interval, 1.7, 99) and with eating regular-sized hamburgers (odds ratio, undefined; lower-limit 95% confidence interval, 1.3). Improved surveillance by mandating laboratory- and physician-based reporting of cases of E coli O157:H7 infection and the hemolytic-uremic syndrome might have alerted health officials to this outbreak sooner, which could have resulted in earlier investigation and the institution of measures to prevent more cases.
