[Extraction of plasma lipids preserving antigenic properties of proteins and allowing quantitation of gangliosides by neuraminic acid determination (author's transl)].

A technique described by Cham and Knowles allows the extraction of plasma phospholipides, triglycerides, cholesterol and free fatty acids without denaturing the proteins. The method has been slightly modified by us. Under our conditions, the yield of lipid extraction is comparable to the method of Folch. It has the advantage of not extracting mineral phosphorous and blood glucose. Thus gangliosides can be also easily determined. We confirmed by immunoelectrophoresis that the antigenic properties of plasmatic proteins remain after lipid extraction.

Marijuana intoxication by passive inhalation: documentation by detection of urinary metabolites.

During the course of a study on the effects of chronic, heavy marijuana use, a placebo control subject reported dizziness and nausea, showed tachycardia and conjunctivitis, and was found to have urinary cannabinoid metabolites. Staff members observing the marijuana smokers also complained of similar subjective symptoms. The detection of cannabinoids in the urine of this nonsmoker documents the previously anecdotal concept of the "contact high" and has implications for marijuana research and for precautions that may be necessary should marijuana become legal.

[Neuropathologic and toxicologic study of 12 cases of bismuth encephalopathy].

Examination of twelve cases of bismuth encephalopathy showed a constantand marked elevation of the bismuth levels in autopsy cerebral tissue (ranging from 2-8 mg/kg to 25 mg/kg). These values were found to be much higher than the last-measured Bismuth venous blood values. In every case, periveinular lymphocytic infiltration and abundant intra-cytoplasmic lipofuscin were seen. The microanalysis with Castaing's electrode revealed the presence of focal areas of bismuth in the leptomeningeal spaces. The significance of the lesions is not fully established and it will undergo further investigations.

[Determination of colchicine in biological fluids].

The authors described a fluorimetric method of estimation of colchicine applicable to biological fluids, during treatment and, especially, during acute poisoning. Blood and urinary concentrations confirm the data in the literature.

[Determination of isoniazid in blood plasma].

The authors describe a new method of estimation of isoniazid in biological fluids, based on the formation and extraction of aluminium chelate obtained after combination of the isoniazid with salicylic aldehyde. The study of conditions of defecation and reaction permits one to eliminate interference with the metabolites, especially the acido-labile metabolites and obtain results comparable with those of microbiological methods.

[Circadian variations of the effects of ethanol and of blood ethanol values in the healthy adult man. Chronopharmacological study].

Six healthy young men (22 to 26 years) who had fasted for 12 hours volunteered for this study (subject synchronization: diurnal activity from 07(00) to midnight and nocturnal rest). A set dose of ethanol (0.67 g/kg body weight) was ingested at the fixed (and random) hours of 07(00), 11(00), 19(00) and 23(00), with a week between tests. A set of physiological variables: psychological tests (selft-rating of mood, of physical vigor and of ebriety, tempo, random number addition test); physical variables (heart rate, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, peak expiratory flow, oral temperature and grip strength); blood variables (plasma ethanol, cortisol, lactic acid, pyruvic acid, glucose and erythrocyte K+) and urinary variables (volume, epinephrine, nor-epinephrine and 5-HIAA) were documented at least at 4 hourly intervals and set times. The cosinor method was used for chronobiological statistical analyses. The parameters characterizing the ethanol pharmacokinetics (chronopharmacokinetics) demonstrated a circadian rhythm (p less than 0.05): e. g. the peak height of ethanolemia is greater when ethanol is ingested at 07(00) than at other times. Also a circadian rhythm in biosystems susceptibility can be demonstrated (p less than 0.05) (chronesthesy) with a peak time not necessarily corresponding either to that of ethanolemia or to that of other variables. The overall circadian changes in ethanol effects (chronergy) can be viewed as a combination of both ethanol chronesthesy and chronokinetics.
