Disulfiram implantation: a dose response trial.

Alcoholic volunteers (N = 120) were assigned at random to receive an 800 mg, 1200 mg, or 1600 mg subcutaneous disulfiram implant. Patients were followed for a 2-year period. Although all groups showed an increase in sobriety following implantation, there was no significant dose-response relationship. There were no significant between-group differences in the incidence of disulfiram-ethanol reaction.

Gender reorientation and psychosocial adjustment in male-to-female transsexuals.

This study examined the relationship, in a sample of male-to-female transsexuals, between psychological and social adjustment, on the one hand, and gender reorientation (approximation of the status of the opposite biological sex), on the other. Three gender reorientation variables were studied: exogenous female hormones, vaginoplasty, and social feminization (adoption of the female gender role at home and in the transsexual's social life and the procurement of documents indicating the female sex). These three gender reorientation variables plus age were employed as predictor variables in a series of multiple regression analyses. Five stepwise regression analyses were carried out, one for each of five criterion variables (depression, tension, involvement with a male partner, cohabitation with a male partner, and the MMPI Lie Scale). There was a statistically significant negative correlation between depression and social feminization and between tension and social feminization, and a significant positive correlation between cohabitation with a male partner and vaginoplasty. Neither the MMPI Lie Scale nor the simple fact of having been "involved" with a male partner at some point during the past year correlated significantly with any of the predictor variables. These results indicate that gender reorientation is associated with better psychological and social adjustment in male-to-female transsexuals.

Measuring physical aggressiveness in heterosexual, homosexual, and transsexual males.

The purpose of this study was the development of a self-report measure of boyhood aggressiveness for use with adult males. Aggressiveness was defined as a generalized disposition to engage in physically combative or competitive interactions with male peers. This attribute is of sexological interest because of the reported difference in physical aggressiveness between heterosexual and homosexual boys. A physical aggressiveness scale (PAS) was constructed from items regarding boyhood athletic interest and proficiency, as well as fighting with and feelings of unease around male peers. The PAS and Part A of the Feminine Gender Identity Scale for males (FGIS(A), Freund et al., 1977) were administered to 193 adult men. The PAS was shown to be reliable and factorially pure. The PAS scores of homosexuals were significantly lower than those of heterosexuals, and the scores of male-to-female transsexuals were lower yet. No differences were found among three heterosexual groups: prison inmates and nonuniversity- and university-educated males. Precisely symmetrical results were obtained with the FGIS(A), with the male-to-female transsexuals scoring highest and the heterosexuals lowest. Group differences in FGIS(A) scores were greater than those in PAS scores; this was interpreted as possible evidence that physical aggressiveness is more sensitive than gender identity to variables uncorrelated with erotic preference, e.g., perceptual-motor ability, rate of physical maturation, etc. The main results suggest that whatever underlying factor relates homosexuality to feminine gender identity in childhood relates this erotic preference to anomalously low levels of physical aggressiveness in childhood as well.

Is the distant relationship of fathers and homosexual sons related to the sons' erotic preference for male partners, or to the sons' atypical gender identity, or to both?

Study 1 compared the retrospectively reported father-son relationships of four groups of adult males: (a) Gynephiles (males who erotically prefer physically mature females), (b) androphiles (who prefer physically mature males), (c) a combined group of heterosexual pedophiles and pedohebephiles (the latter being attracted to pubescent as well as prepubescent females), and (d) a combined group of homosexual pedophiles and pedohebephiles (the latter attracted to pubescent as well as prepubescent males). The gynephiles were paid volunteers; the latter three groups were patients. The androphiles, the only group among those compared known to exhibit a measurably greater degree of cross gender identity in childhood, were also the only group to report significantly poorer father-son relations. The homosexual pedo/pedohebephiles, who also prefer male partners but who exhibit typical male gender identity in childhood, did not differ in father-son relations from the gynephiles or the heterosexual pedo/pedohebephiles. Study 2 showed that, within a sample of nonpatient volunteer androphiles, those individuals who reported the greatest degree of cross gender behavior in childhood also tended to report the worst relationships with their fathers. This correlation was replicated within a sample of androphilic patients in Study 3. The consistent pattern of results obtained from these three studies suggests that the emotionally distant relationships of fathers and androphilic sons relate to the sons' atypical childhood gender identity (or observable gender role behavior) rather than to the sons' erotic preference for male partners per se.

[Controlled centrifugation by a w2dt integrator. Application to blood transfusion].

The centrifugation constitutes a fundamental stage in the blood components preparation as fresh frozen plasma and platelets rich plasma. The measure of the total effect of centrifugation (VT) is achieved with an integrator "w2dt". This parameter characterizes, in an unique way, the preparation procedure of a blood component. The value VT is determined and then sticked on the integrator, which made the rotation stop as soon as the preselected effect of centrifugation is reached. Thanks to this accessory, the authors have analysed the relative importance of the three data: acceleration, constant speed and deceleration, on the total effect of centrifugation. This analysis has induced them to a new approach of the centrifugation. For the authors, the classic notion of rotation time at constant speed, become insufficient. In blood transfusion, several applications are possible. The authors have determined the optimal conditions of platelets rich plasma (yield higher than 80% during a minimum real time) and platelets concentrate preparation with two different centrifuges, Sorvall RC3B and Jouan K 110 SX, equipped with Sorvall Integrator. The reproductibility of the experiments is satisfying when the centrifuged weight is comparatively constant. The standardization of centrifugation technics will be easier when the rotation radius will be included in the calculation of the total effect of centrifugation, thanks to integration.

Biochemical indices of nutritional status in maternal, cord, and early neonatal blood.

The nutritional status of 556 infants born in good health was measured by selected biochemical parameters in maternal venous blood, in mixed arteriovenous cord blood at delivery, and in infant's capillary blood collected at 5 days. The determinations indicating nutritional status were: Hb, hematocrit, protein, cholesterol, triglycerides, vitamins A, C, E, and folic acid, iron, calcium and magnesium. In maternal venous blood, a significant number of women were found to be deficient; 3.4% had Hb below 9.5 g/dl; 6.1% had hematocrit less than 30%; 4.0% had total protein below 5.5 g/dl; 7.0% had vitamin C below 0.20 mg/dl; 3.0% were deficient in iron (less than 40 microgram/dl), 3.6% in folic acid (less than 2.0 ng/ml) and 5.2% in calcium (less than 7.5 mg/dl). Significant correlations were more frequent between maternal and cord blood than in other comparisons. An influence of parity and maternal age was more evident for vitamin C in cord blood than in maternal venous blood. Iron in maternal and cord blood decreased in relation to parity.

Abnormal suppressor cell function in atopic dermatitis.

A status of suppressor cells in patients with atopic dermatitis was studied. As a group, they showed absent concanavalin A-inducible suppressor cell function as measured by proliferative responses to pokeweed mitogen and decreased function as measured by responses to phytohemagglutinin or concanavalin A. Similarly, preincubation in medium enhanced proliferative responses in normal donors but not in atopic dermatitis patients, suggesting an absence of a short-lived suppressor cell population in the latter group. Suppressor cell function correlated negatively with log10 of serum IgE concentrations. Theophylline-sensitive suppressor cell numbers were significantly decreased in atopic dermatitis patients (p less than 0.01). In vitro preincubation of normal lymphocytes with aminophylline or isoproterenol (10 microgram/ml) enhanced subsequent proliferative responses to pokeweed mitogen. In contrast, actual depression was seen with cells from atopic dermatitis patients, suggesting abnormal immunomodulatory effects of these drugs in the disease.

Suppressor cell function in respiratory allergy. Modulation by aminophylline and isoproterenol.

The status of suppressor cells in patients with allergic rhinitis or asthma was studied. This latter group showed absent concanavalin A (ConA)-inducible suppressor cell function as measured by proliferative responses to pokeweed mitogen (PWM) and decreased function as measured by responses to phytohemagglutinin (PHA) or ConA. Patients with rhinitis showed values intermediate between normals and asthmatics. Similarly, preincubation in medium enhanced proliferative responses in normal and rhinitis patients but not in asthmatics, suggesting an absence of a short-lived suppressor cell population in the latter group. Suppressor cell function correlated negatively with log10 of serum IgE concentrations. Theophylline-sensitive suppressor cell numbers were slightly decreased in rhinitis patients and significantly so in asthmatics (p less than 0.01). In vitro preincubation of normal lymphocytes with aminophylline or isoproterenol (10 micrograms/ml) enhanced subsequent proliferative responses to PWM. Little enhancement was observed with cells from rhinitis patients, and actual depression was seen with cells from asthmatics, suggesting abnormal immunomodulatory effects of cyclic-AMP active drugs in this group of patients.

Food intake patterns of infants with high serum cholesterol level at six months.

In our longitudinal study on the influence of nutrition upon health during infancy we found in a cohort of 556 infants in good health, 6.4% of infants at six months with a total serum cholesterol level above 200 mg/100 ml. Because of the known importance of hypercholesterolemia for health we studied the role of the food intake patterns during the first six months in relation to the serum cholesterol. We analysed the 24 hours dietary recalls, the dietary habits and a set of biochemical determinations used for evaluation of nutritional status: 35 infants, 21 girls and 14 boys, were compared with a control group matched for sex and birth date. There were no differences in mean body weight and socio-demographic characteristics. Daily energy and protein intake was higher in the study group. Analysing milk consumption we found that the daily intake was always higher in the high cholesterol group. The solid foods were introduced earlier in the study group, i.e. for 46% of infants in the second week of life. The serum levels of vitamins A, C, and E, and of triglyceride were higher in the high cholesterol groups. At twelve months 33% of infants with the cholesterol level above 200 mg/100 ml we included in the studied group remain still with a high level. This tendency underlines the need of further research.

Disulfiram implantation. A placebo-controlled trial with two-year follow-up.

Ten alcoholics implanted with disulfiram had longer periods of abstinence after treatment than did 10 alcoholics implanted with placebo; 7 of the disulfiram-implanted patients experienced a disulfiram-ethanol reaction in uncontrolled drinking situations, while none of the placebo-implanted patients did.

Vitamin E and C levels in infants during the first year of life.

The considerably lower vitamin E level found in cord blood and in newborns at birth than those found in the venous blood of mothers at delivery are not yet fully explained. In a group of 217 not selected newborns, we attempted to establish the relation between vitamin E and C levels at delivery and the changes during the first year of life. The mean serum vitamin E level rose from 0.37 mg/ml at 3 days to 0.80 mg/100 ml at 6 months and to 0.72 mg/100 ml at 12 months. On the other hand vitamin C mean levels lowered from 0.93 mg/100 ml in cord blood to 0.77 mg/100 ml at 6 months and to 0.73 mg/100 ml at 12 months. The rise of vitamin E values could be explained by the early use of infant solid foods with high vitamin and mineral content and by the increase of serum lipoproteins. Except at 3 days after delivery there were no individual values of serum vitamin E below the acceptable 0.35 mg/100 ml limit. However, serum vitamin C levels compatible with a moderate risk were very often observed, i.e., in 27.1% of infants at 6 months and in 30.5% at 1 year. Thus, vitamin E intake in infants was satisfactory with the usual diet but not vitamin C for which blood levels were not adequate. In view of these findings it appears necessary to evaluate periodically the vitamin E as well as vitamin C status in the infant population.

Vitamins C and E in spontaneous abortion.

A group of 50 spontaneously aborting women was compared with the same number of pregnant women whose pregnancies terminated uneventfully. Biochemical parameters were studied and particular attention was paid to the vitamin C and E levels in both groups. A significantly higher percentage of aborting women had individual values of serum alpha-tocopherol above the 0.50 mg/100 ml normal limit. There was no significant difference in overall frequency distribution of vitamin C values in both groups. However, at the end of the first trimester the mean values of vitamin C were significantly higher in the aborting group. This could not be interpreted as an evidence of causal association.
