The investigations were undertaken for tracing changes occurring in exercise-related metabolites and pressure of respiratory blood gases, for observing in this way the development of post-exercise restitution in animals with pharmacological blockade of the carotid sinuses. The experiments were done on control and experimental rats with sinus blockade produced by means of 1.0 microliter lignocaine injected into the area of the sinuses. The animals were subjected to a workload performing a work of 188.6 J/m/sec at a power of 0.104 of W/m/sec. The measurements included the heart rate, the amplitude of respiration rates, blood levels of glucose, lactate, pyruvate and LDH activity. In the arterial blood and venous blood the values of pO2 and pCO2, H+ concentration and base reserve and the index of O2 utilization were determined. Differences were found between the control group and the group with sinus receptor blockade with an earlier return of the determined values to their initial state in the experimental group. The increase of the O2 utilization index in the experimental animals paralleled the lactate fall and LDH rise, and H+ concentration was unchanged. These changes show that carotid sinuses receptors cooperate with the mechanisms regulating postexercise restitution.
BACKGROUND/AIMS: The aim of the present study was to investigate the relationship between pathological factors, DNA ploidy patterns, proliferative index and survival in a population of patients undergoing resection for adenocarcinoma of periampullary region. MATERIALS AND METHODS: DNA ploidy and proliferative index of periampullary cancer tissue was measured by flow cytometry in 73 patients who had undergone pancreatoduodenectomy. RESULTS: Seventy-four percent (n = 54) of cancers were diploid and 26% (n = 19) were aneuploid. The median survival time of patients with diploid cancers was 30.1 (s.d. 5.1) months and with aneuploid cancers was 16.0 (s.d. 2.9) months (p = 0.02). Kaplan-Meier survival curves showed that the patients with aneuploid cancers succumbed to recurrent disease within 40 months after surgery whereas 20% of patients with diploid cancers survived longer than 40 months. In patients with long survival (3 years) there was a significant difference between aneuploid and diploid cancers (p < 0.001). In the multivariate analysis, tumor location and tumor size are independent prognostic variables for the length of survival after resection of periampullary cancer. CONCLUSIONS: DNA ploidy pattern appears to be one important prognostic predictor in patients with "long term" survival after successful pancreatoduodenectomy for periampullary cancers.
Tonographic determinations Po and C), cannulation of the anterior chamber and measurements of the secreted aqueous humor volume by the method of posterior-anterior chamber perfusion with inulin solution were carried out in normal eyes, in eyes after parasympathetic denervation and during the action of a cholinergic neurotransmitter under the conditions of postdenervation hyperexcitability. Parasympathetic denervation of the eyeball was obtained by excision of the ciliary ganglion. Additonally, pharmacological blockade of the adrenergic neurons was applied. In the aqueous humor from the posterior and anterior chamber osmolality, as well as concentrations of sodium potassium, calcium, magnesium and total alpha-amino nitrogen were determined. The cholinergic effect on the volume of secreted aqueous humor and on the channels of its outflow was described. This effect was enhanced by the postdenervation hyperexcitability state, indicating a stimulating parasympathetic influence on the passage of electrolytes and amino acids into the intraocular fluids.
