Effects of calcitonin on the brain of aged rats.

We have recently demonstrated that calcitonin, a putative neuromodulator, may influence extrapyramidal motor system by decreasing nigro-striatal dopaminergic function. Since calcitonin is extensively used in aged patients, we have investigated whether calcitonin might influence extrapyramidal motor behavior (haloperidol-induced catalepsy and apomorphine-induced hyperactivity) in rats of different ages. Intracerebroventricular injection of salmon calcitonin (1 micrograms/kg) prevented apomorphine-induced hyperactivity in 2, 7, 18 or 21 month old rats, but potentiated haloperidol-induced catalepsy only in 2 or 7 month old rats. In addition, in all the animals salmon calcitonin significantly decreased the secretion of prolactin, an anterior pituitary hormone that may act at central level enhancing nigro-striatal dopaminergic activity.

[Thioamide derivatives with gastro-protective activity].

A series of 3-aryl-prop-2-enthioamide derivatives has been synthesized. These compounds were evaluated for gastro-protective activity in the rat. It has been shown that the N,N-dimethylamino derivative was the most active compound in this series [Table I comp. (II)].

In vivo and in vitro interference of phosphatidylserine liposomes on prolactin secretion in the rat.

The effect of sonicated suspensions of phosphatidylserine (PS), an acidic phospholipid, was investigated on prolactin secretion utilizing in vivo and in vitro approaches. Acute and chronic administration of PS reduced plasma prolactin levels during different phases of circadian rhythms. The phospholipid was able to inhibit the plasma prolactin surge, which occurs in cycling female rats on the afternoon of proestrus. The time course of PS on prolactin secretion was characterized by a short latency (15 min) and a long duration of action (6 h). In rats with hypothalamic deafferentation PS partially reduced the increase of circulating prolactin induced by pretreatment with alpha-methyltyrosine. An inhibition of prolactin release was observed if anterior pituitary glands were incubated in presence of PS. This effect was prevented by the addition of the dopamine antagonist sulpiride to the medium. In conclusion, PS decreases prolactin secretion both in vivo and in vitro. The inhibition of the hormone secretion appears to be due to the action of PS at the level of the pituitary; however, a concomitant stimulatory action on the turnover of the tuberoinfundibular neurons cannot be ruled out.

[Post-amputation dehiscence. A problem resolved].

70 peripheral amputations of the lower extremities in arteriosclerotic and diabetic vasculopathics have been examined. In a number of cases, the postoperative period was complicated by dehiscence of the suture on the stump, with lengthening of hospitalization time, risk of infection in the underlying bone and thus further amputation. To solve this problem, dehiscence was treated with dermo-epidermal autografts to cover the missing tissue area. The dehiscence was cleaned with compresses of 2% amuchina associated with topical instillations of Lincomycin hydrochloride. The cure percentage after grafting was about 80%.

[Benzogammapirone in the treatment of digestive hemorrhages].

Given the difficulties of treating digestive haemorhages with normal coagulant methods, and considering that most haemorrhages are due to vascular factors, a vasoprotective substance was associated with common coagulant therapies. Benzogammapirone was used orally and by selective arterial infusion. The series is presented and the results discussed.
