Social organization and mating success in local song populations of village indigobirds, Vidua chalybeata.

Behavioral interactions among color-marked individual Vidua chalybeata that shared common song dialects were observed for 5 years in two populations at Lochinvar National Park, Zambia. Social interactions involved males visiting and competing for mating sites and female visiting male in an apparent sampling of potential copulating partners. Differences in mating success among the polygynous males were compared with male behavior and territory resources, and criteria were developed to test the importance of intrasexual male competition and female mate choice in explaining the mating system of the populations. Song behavior best explained differences in mating success of males, with lesser effects of neighboring males and the defensible resources around the call-sites. The social organization of song populations resembles that of a dispersed lek with females visiting many males but mating with few males. We discuss the observations on indigobirds in relation to behavioral selection, sexual selection, and mating systems. Mating systems of certain populations and species are compared using statistics of individual mating success.

Comparison of an all-aqueous automated urine pregnancy oestrogen method with one using organic solvent extraction.

A comparative study between an all-aqueous automated urine pregnancy oestrogen method and a well established one requiring organic solvent extraction showed good agreement (r = 0.992). Advantages offered by the all-aqueous method include a faster rate of sample analysis and elimination of the difficulties of phase separation. The storage of urine for 5 days did not affect the oestrogen concentration measured by the all-aqueous method. Glucose, which reduced the apparent oestrogen concentration, was readily removed by treatment of the urine with borohydride, and treated urines showed good recoveries. The recovery of oestrogen was inadequate when glucose was removed from urine by incubation with yeast, possibly due to the formation of acetaldehyde.

Comparison of treatments for congenital nonobstructive nonhaemolytic hyperbilirubinaemia.

A patient with Crigler-Najjar disease has survived with the help of phototherapy to the age of 2 years without neurological damage. Because long periods of phototherapy are a threat to normal development, a search was made for supplementary treatments. Cholestyramine and a high fat diet were effective, and possibly also aspartic acid. Maintenance therapy with cholestyramine allowed the amount of phototherapy given to be reduced.

Interpretation of serum creatine kinase in suspected myocardial infarction.

Serum creatine kinase (CK) was measured in blood donors, patients admitted to hospital with suspected myocardial infarction, and healthy hospital personnel to investigate the normal range, the daily variation in healthy people, and the effect of intramuscular injections of pentazocine or diamorphine. There was considerable daily variation in the healthy controls, apparently related to exercise. In defining both the normal range and the significance of day-to-day increases in the serum CK account should be taken of this factor. An upper limit of normal of 210 IU/1. Should apply to previously ambulant patients and of 165 IU/1. to patients previously at rest. An increase greater than 85% in successive daily values is uncommon in health.Intramuscular injections of both pentazocine and diamorphine caused a significant rise in the serum CK in six out of 25 patients. The highest rise observed was from 64 IU/1. to 395 IU/1. Caution is therefore urged in the diagnosis of myocardial infarction from the serum CK values when these intramuscular injections have been given.

Interpretation of serum calcium in patients with abnormal serum proteins.

Two hundred consecutive specimens received in this laboratory for "liver function tests" showed a wide range of abnormal protein concentrations. Calcium concentration correlated closely with albumin (r = 0.867) but less closely with total protein (r = 0.682). A simple formula for adjusting calcium concentration was derived from the regression equation of calcium on albumin. Adjusted calcium = calcium - albumin + 4.0, where calcium is in mg/100 ml and albumin in g/100 ml.Low calcium concentrations were found in 49 (24.5%) and raised concentrations in six (3%) of the 200 blood specimens taken for liver function tests. After adjustment, the 95% limits of the observed range were identical with the 95% limits of the normal range determined in this laboratory. Unlike adjustments based on total protein or specific gravity, the adjustment on albumin in 39 specimens which showed hypergammaglobulinaemia on electrophoresis gave normal calcium concentrations.

The Leeds regional quality control scheme for clinical biochemistry: a progress report.

The results from a regional quality control scheme for clinical biochemistry are analysed. Comparison with results from an earlier period shows that the quality of several of the 15 routine analyses has improved. The methods by which the sera are produced and distributed, and the weekly results are analysed, are described. Each of the 25 laboratories receives an individual weekly computer printout within 24 hours of the deadline for the receipt of results. At the end of each six-month period a printout is produced ranking each laboratory for ;accuracy' and ;precision' for each test.
