Bacteriology of normal and infected conjunctiva.

The conjunctivas of 273 inflamed eyes were cultured by both aerobic and anaerobic techniques. Isolations were obtained from 267 (97.8%) of the eyes. Aerobic organisms were isolated from 237 (86.8%) of the conjunctivas. Staphylococcus aureus from 63 (23.1%) of the diseased eyes was the aerobic pathogen most often isolated. Anaerobic bacteria were isolated from 172 (63.0%) of the conjunctivas. Propionibacterium acnes was isolated from 126 (46.2%) of the conjunctivas, and Peptostreptococcus species were isolated from 80 (29.3%) of the conjunctivas. Comparison with the bacteriology of 96 normal eyes showed that anaerobes play a much greater role as etiological agents of conjunctivitis than formerly believed. When anaerobic bacteria were isolated, they appeared on the average in 7 days, indicating that they may be missed by ordinary bacteriological culturing.

Microorganisms in heated nebulizers.

Out of 353 heated nebulizers in actual use which were cultured in the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital, 118 (33%) were found to be contaminated. Gram-negative organisms predominated with rare micrococci and fungi. A slow-growing Vibrio was also recovered from 4 nebulizers. Heating of nebulizers above 46 C resulted in significant reduction of contamination. Types of heated nebulizers also figured significantly in the rate of contamination found. Carefully considered recommendations for the care and use of respiratory therapy equipment must be instituted and enforced. Techniques for terminal disinfection of equipment, followed by sterilization should result in the issue of sterile equipment for each patient. Rules for maintenance of equipment at the bedside are also needed.

T-strain mucoplasmas and reproductive failure in monkeys.

T-strain mycoplasmas were isolated from the genital tracts of 3 genera of female monkeys: the talapoins, Miopithecas talapoin, the patas, Erythrocebus patas, and the macaques, Macaca fascicularis. The talapoins have not reproduced successfully for the past 2 yr. Fertility in the patas has also been reduced, with a high incidence of stillbirths and spontaneous abortions. The macaques were not permitted to breed.
