Antifertility effects of aqueous extract of Carica papaya seeds in male rats.

The influence of the crude aqueous extract of Carica papaya L. (Caricaceae) seeds has been studied on semen profile, fertility, body and organ weight response, and toxicology in male albino rats. The extract was administered at the dose regimens of 10 and 50 mg/animal/day orally for 30, 60, and 90 days and 0.1 and 1.0 mg/animal/day intramuscularly for 15 and 30 days. Cauda epididymal sperm motility and count was reduced significantly at low and high dose regimens both in the oral as well as the intramuscular groups. The reduced sperm motility was associated with morphological defects. Testicular sperm counts were also reduced in all the treatment groups except the low dose intramuscular group. Fertility tests showed dose- and duration-dependent reduction and zero fertility was observed at high dose regimens of the oral and intramuscular groups following 60 and 30 days of treatment, respectively. Testicular weight was reduced in all the treatment groups, whereas accessory sex organs showed a variable response. Body weight and toxicological observations did not show any untoward response. Fertility and all other associated changes returned to normal within 45 and 30 days of treatment cessation in the oral and intramuscular groups, respectively. The data revealed that reversible sterility could be induced in male rats by papaya seeds aqueous extract treatment without adverse effects on libido and toxicological profile.

Nonischemic intussusception in childhood.

The classical presentation of intussusception consisting of severe abdominal pain, bloody stool, and a palpable abdominal mass leads to the correct diagnosis in majority of the patients. However, an atypical presentation often results in a delayed diagnosis as is commonly seen in nonischemic intussusception. The nonischemic intussusception is a distinct clinical entity that is characterized by a long history of less severe symptoms commonly noticed in older children. The incidence of diarrhea in this group is higher than in the acute variety of intussusception. This variant of intussusception requires a high degree of suspicion for the diagnosis in atypical clinical presentation. The present study summarises our experience treating 31 such cases of nonischemic intussusception during a period of 25 years from 1966 to July 1990.

Child

Antifertility investigations on the crude chloroform extract of Carica papaya Linn. seeds in male albino rats.

Crude chloroform extract of C. papaya seeds (5 mg/animal/day, po, for 20, 40 and 60 days) was investigated for contraceptive efficacy and related side effects in male albino rats. The crude extract reduced fertility to zero per cent by 40 to 60 days of treatment. Suppression of cauda epididymal sperm motility was the most pronounced effect of the drug administration. Scanning electron microscopic observations revealed treatment induced abnormalities in sperms. Cauda epididymal and testicular sperm counts decreased following treatment. Clinical parameters did not show any alterations. Results suggest that the contraceptive effects of chloroform extract of papaya seeds are mainly post-testicular in nature without influencing toxicological profile and libido of the animals.

Congenital granular-cell myoblastoma.

Congenital granular-cell myoblastoma is a rare jaw tumor presenting in the neonatal period. The differentiation between congenital epulis and granular cell myoblastoma is a controversial issue amongst pathologists. It is a benign swelling in which simple excision is the treatment of choice. Here we report two cases with a brief review of literature.

Coordination behavior and antifungicidal, antibacterial, and antifertility activities of dioxomolybdenum(VI) complexes of biologically active heterocyclic benzothiazolines.

Synthesis, characterization, and structural aspects of a new class of dioxomolybdenum(VI) complexes with biologically active benzothiazolines, 2-(2-pyridyl) benzothiazoline, 2-(2-thienyl) benzothiazoline, 2-(2-furyl) benzothiazoline, 2-(3-indolyl) benzothiazoline, glyoxal benzothiazoline, biacetylbenzothiazoline, benzil benzothiazoline, and terphthaldehyde benzothiazoline have been described. The newly synthesized complexes, [MoO2(Bzt)2] and [MoO2(Bzt')] (where BztH and Bzt'H2 represent benzothazoline molecules) have been characterized by elemental analysis, conductance measurements, molecular weight determinations, and magnetic studies. Based on IR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, and electronic spectral studies, distorted octahedral geometry with cis-MoO2 group has been indicated for the resulting complexes. Two benzothiazolines and their corresponding metal complexes were screened for their antifungicidal and antibacterial activity on several fungi and bacteria and found to be quite active in this respect. In addition, antifertility activity of representative ligands and their molybdenum complexes was also evaluated and discussed in male mice.
