Self-esteem during the school years. Its normal development and hazardous decline.

Self-esteem has a major impact on all aspects of a child and adolescent's life. This article examines the emergence of self-esteem within a dynamic ongoing child-environment interaction; a framework for understanding the components of self-esteem; behavioral manifestations of self-esteem, especially as expressed in different coping maneuvers; and strategies and interventions to reinforce the self-esteem of children and adolescents.

Rorschach responses in healthy, community dwelling older adults.

Five predicted relationships between age and intellectual level and 16 Rorschach variables were examined through a cross-sectional analysis of 47 healthy, community-dwelling elderly men and women. Subjects were compared by age and intellectual level using gender, level of medication, and scores on the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) and the Geriatric Social Readjustment Questionnaire (GSRQ) as covariates. Screening tests for psychiatric and physical illness, recent life events, and hearing and vision loss were administered. In contrast to prior research suggesting changes in Rorschach scores with differences in age and intellectual level, only one significant difference was found for these variables. The data suggest that age and intellectual level may contribute less to Rorschach responses than was previously thought.

Incidence and significance of candiduria.

The 100,000 colony count has been used without careful evaluation for the diagnosis of renal candidiasis. Therefore, a prospective study was done on 1,004 urine samples from patients without signs of candidiasis to determine the incidence of candiduria and Candida colony counts. These were compared with colony counts from histologically proved cases of renal candidiasis. The incidence of candiduria varied from a low of 4% in men to a high of 39% in girls during their second week of antibiotic therapy. The overall mean colony count was 1,292 +/- 1,500. The mean colony count in clean-catch urine specimens from six proved cases of renal candidiasis was 23,750 +/- 12,311. The difference in colony counts from proved and unproved cases is statistically significant. Counts greater than 10,000 Candida organisms per milliliter require further investigation.
