[Destructive cesarean section: hysterectomy for obstetric reasons and post-abortive hysterectomy. Analysis of 35 cases].

The Authors examined surgical case studies for the 20-year period from February 1968 to February 1988 concerning hysterectomies performed for obstetric reasons at the "La Sapienza" University of Rome, Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department; these numbered 35 out of 69,677 births. They also considered hysterectomies carried out during caesarean sections, during birth or the postpartum period, during the puerperium and after miscarriage. They also analyzed reasons for the action taken, the type of operation, the length of the gestation period, the mother's age, and transfusions given.

[Hysterectomy in obstetrics. Analysis and comparison of a group of cases from the Italian and the international literature (536 cases)].

The Authors made a comparison between the frequency of obstetric hysterectomies carried out at the "La Sapienza" University Obstetrics and Gynaecology Departments and of those reported in international publications regarding Great Britain, USA, Australia, Saudi Arabia and Libya. Data obtained covered the 462 hysterectomies effected out of the 442,174 births from 1972 to 1895. Results were compared as under: general frequency per number of births, reasons for surgery, type of operation carried out, age of the patient, gestation period, obstetrical history and complications.

Phytochrome-Mediated Control of Diamine Oxidase Level in the Epicotyl of Etiolated Lentil (Lens culinaris Medicus) Seedlings.

Diamine oxidase (DAO; EC 1.4.3.6) levels are strongly reduced in epicotyls of 3-day-old etiolated lentil (Lens culinaris Medicus) seedlings upon exposure to continuous red and blue light, as compared to etiolated controls. Far-red light inhibits DAO activity to a lesser extent. A less marked effect can also be obtained by short (5-10 min) daily exposures. Phytochrome involvement in this light-mediated response has been demonstrated by red/far-red reversibility experiments. These findings provide the first evidence that mechanisms underlying the photoregulation of DAO level in the Leguminosae are related to photomorphogenesis and are essentially unrelated to the photosynthetic capacity of the seedling.

Determination of diamine oxidase in lentil seedlings by enzymic activity and immunoreactivity.

A competitive radioimmunoassay for the quantitation of diamine oxidase (EC 1.4.3.6) from Lens culinaris is reported. Specific antibodies raised in rabbits immunized with a homogeneous preparation of the enzyme were incubated with purified (125)I-enzyme and with either unlabeled diamine oxidase or plant material. Antigen-antibody complexes were isolated from the mixture by incubation with Staphylococcus protein A. The sensitivity of the test was about 5 nanograms in terms of enzyme protein. This assay was applied to the determination of the enzyme in extracts from lentil shoots grown either in the dark or in the light. Diamine oxidase activity and enzyme protein (as determined by radioimmunoassay) were measured during 7 days after germination. Both enzymic activity and enzyme protein declined slowly in the dark and rapidly in the light. These results indicate that fluctuation of the enzymic activity in this organ, both in the light and in the dark, are mediated via changes in the amount of the enzyme protein and not via the action of an inhibitor.

[Huntington chorea. Clinical correlations and preliminary neuropsychological data].

One of the cardinal features of Huntington's disease (HD) is the progressive cognitive deterioration. However, studies carried out on the neuropsychological profile in HD are discordant because there are differences in study designs, stage of disease and because of the coexistence of psychiatric disorders and cultural and educational background of subjects. Aim of this study is to relate the neuropsychological assessment with duration of illness and severity of motor impairment. Fourteen patients are given a neuropsychological battery, the results were statistically related to age and schooling. The data demonstrate very slow progression of cognitive deterioration without focal impairment of cognitive functions and without correlation with the severity of disease.

Are patients with constructional disorders different in visuo-spatial abilities?

Many authors hypothesized a linkage between the anatomical region of damage and the nature of constructional apraxia. In particular, the functional impairment of right brain damaged patients should consist in a visuo-spatial defect. However a large amount of researches have showed impaired visuo-spatial abilities in apraxic subjects respect to non-apraxics, but independently by the side of brain damage. In these researches constructional and visuo-spatial abilities have been often evaluated by methods not comparable among them. Aim of this paper is to verify the constructional performances of left and right brain damaged patients, utilizing exclusively the copy of geometric figures and tasks considered specific in detecting visuo-spatial disabilities. The experimental results show that both left and right brain lesions produce impairments of visuo-spatial abilities. Lastly, the utility of a cognitive approach of study is discussed.

Partial acute thrombosis of internal carotid artery: a case report.

OBJECTIVE: The effectiveness of the urgent carotid TEA in patients with not stabilizes serious neurological symptoms, remains controversial. MATERIAL: The authors report on a case of a partial acute carotid thrombosis. The patient had outcomes of pulmonary tumor dealt with surgical removal of the medium right lobe. At admission, the neurological examination evidenced non specific neurological deficits to both the advanced limbs above all. The blood test evidenced 628000 platelets. The color-doppler showed in the internal carotid artery of right the presence of floating thrombus, during very small fibro-calcified plate, likely ulcerated. RESULTS: The patient was submitted to surgical urgent procedure without ulterior diagnostic deepening. Such attitude was justified from the total regression of the symptomatology and from the absence of alterations of the BEE. DISCUSSION: The urgent surgical treatment has had good outcome. In literature there are similar cases but not place upon ones because of "aetiology" to the inner presence of floating thrombus in carotid not completely occluding in all and the three cases, causes do not correspond from alters platelet parameters, but thrombus was of cardiogenic origin in one case, it was caused by hormonal therapy for sterility in the second, there was thrombosis of carotid aneurysm in third. CONCLUSION: We remark the importance of eco-color Doppler for urgent diagnosis of acute thrombosis, and timeliness of surgical treatment in the "acute" patient with attenuation or regression of the debut symptomatology.

[Recognition of object figures in unusual perspective and mental imagery].

Two cases are described: one with left occipital lesion and the other one with bilateral occipital damage; the first showed deficit of Mental Imagery and preserved recognition of pictures in unusual perspective; the second, vice-versa, showed integrity of Mental Imagery and deficit in visual recognition. The relationship between Mental Imagery and recognition of pictures in unusual perspective is discussed.
