[Surgical and radiological intervention in the treatment of peripheral arteriovenous fistulas].

The Authors report five examples of arteriovenous fistulas examined in the last two years. The different aetiology concerning these lesions, the most suitable diagnosis and the therapeutic tactics are examined and discussed. When they present results and considerations, they show optimism and discrete realism about results and prognosis as a consequence of technological progress and more and more common multidisciplinary approach towards this pathology.

[Memory. Cognitive, anatomic and pathologic models].

This overview deals with the neuropsychology of memory. First cognitive models proposed for primary and secondary memory are reported, particularly the working memory theory and episodic/semantic distinction are discussed. Briefly the modern point of view about the anatomical bases of memory functions are reported with stressing above all the role of limbic structures. Lastly the pathology of both primary and secondary memory is dealt with, trying to abstract the clinical features of different syndromes.

[Leiomyosarcoma of the jejunum associated with severe enterorrhagia. Clinical case].

The paper describes a cases of jejunal leiomyosarcoma associated with severe enterorrhagia. The rarity of this lesion and its difficult diagnosis are underlined. Having discussed the different anatomo-pathological aspects, the most appropriate diagnostic methods for a early diagnosis are examined. Moreover, the utility of carrying out a regular clinical and diagnostic follow-up of patients who have undergone surgery is stressed so that possible relapses or metastases, which are fatal in the majority of subjects affected by this form of neoplasia, can be treated as quickly as possible.

Characterization of maize polyamine oxidase.

Some structural and biochemical characteristics of polyamine oxidase (PAO) purified from maize shoots have been examined. The enzyme has only alanine as N-terminal amino acid and its N-terminal sequence shows a significant degree of homology with tryptophan 2-monooxygenase from Pseudomonas syringae pv. savastanoi. The pH optimum for the stability of the native enzyme is 5, similar to that of the barley leaf enzyme. Calorimetric analysis shows a single two-state transition at pH 6 with Tm 49.8 degrees. At pH 5 the thermal stability is increased by more than 14 degrees. Amine oxidation products, delta 1-pyrroline and diazabicyclononane, are competitive inhibitors of PAO activity (apparent Ki = 400 and 100 microM respectively). Moreover these compounds improve the thermal stability of the enzyme. N1-Acetylspermine, which is a good substrate for mammalian PAO, acts as a non-competitive inhibitor for the plant enzyme.

[Low-malignancy duodenal leiomyosarcoma].

The authors report a case of duodenal leiomyosarcoma presenting a low degree of histological malignancy. The main anatomoclinical features of the neoplasm are summarized. The authors conclude indicating not aggressive surgical therapy as adequate in such cases. However, a prolonged post-operative follow-up is always necessary, in order to detect recurrences as early as possible.

[Liposuction treatment for lipodystrophy of the pelvis and the legs].

In a series of 20 lipolysis procedures, there have been no serious major and few minor complications. Selection of patients is important and the best results can be acquired in the patients under 35 years of age. The postoperative circulation and diuresis control are very important particularly during the first 24 hours.

[Destructive cesarean section: hysterectomy for obstetric reasons and post-abortive hysterectomy. Analysis of 35 cases].

The Authors examined surgical case studies for the 20-year period from February 1968 to February 1988 concerning hysterectomies performed for obstetric reasons at the "La Sapienza" University of Rome, Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department; these numbered 35 out of 69,677 births. They also considered hysterectomies carried out during caesarean sections, during birth or the postpartum period, during the puerperium and after miscarriage. They also analyzed reasons for the action taken, the type of operation, the length of the gestation period, the mother's age, and transfusions given.

[Hysterectomy in obstetrics. Analysis and comparison of a group of cases from the Italian and the international literature (536 cases)].

The Authors made a comparison between the frequency of obstetric hysterectomies carried out at the "La Sapienza" University Obstetrics and Gynaecology Departments and of those reported in international publications regarding Great Britain, USA, Australia, Saudi Arabia and Libya. Data obtained covered the 462 hysterectomies effected out of the 442,174 births from 1972 to 1895. Results were compared as under: general frequency per number of births, reasons for surgery, type of operation carried out, age of the patient, gestation period, obstetrical history and complications.

[Huntington chorea. Clinical correlations and preliminary neuropsychological data].

One of the cardinal features of Huntington's disease (HD) is the progressive cognitive deterioration. However, studies carried out on the neuropsychological profile in HD are discordant because there are differences in study designs, stage of disease and because of the coexistence of psychiatric disorders and cultural and educational background of subjects. Aim of this study is to relate the neuropsychological assessment with duration of illness and severity of motor impairment. Fourteen patients are given a neuropsychological battery, the results were statistically related to age and schooling. The data demonstrate very slow progression of cognitive deterioration without focal impairment of cognitive functions and without correlation with the severity of disease.
