Iron-catalysed propylene epoxidation by nitrous oxide: dramatic shift of allylic oxidation to epoxidation by the modification with alkali metal salts.

A dramatic shift of allylic oxidation to epoxidation has been observed during the oxidation of propylene by N(2)O when the FeO(x)/SBA-15 catalyst is modified with alkali metal salts, and the roles of alkali metal salts are to suppress the reactivity of lattice oxygen and to induce an iron coordination structure effective for epoxidation with N(2)O.

Aortic eNOS expression and phosphorylation in Apo-E knockout mice: differing effects of rapamycin and simvastatin.

BACKGROUND: The inhibition of nitric oxide (NO) by hypercholesterolemia may be mediated, in part, by interactions with caveolin-1 (Cav-1). Because of the facilitatory effects of statins on endothelial function and the adverse effects of rapamycin (RAPA) on plasma lipids, we compared the effects of simvastatin (SMV) and RAPA on endothelial NO synthase (eNOS) and Cav-1 protein expression and phosphorylation in the aortas of apolipoprotein E (Apo-E) knockout (-/-) mice. METHODS: Apo-E -/- mice (n = 38) fed a high-cholesterol diet were given SMV (100 mg/kg/day po), RAPA (3 mg/kg/day ip), or no treatment for 10 weeks. Blood was drawn for serum lipid analysis, and protein was extracted for Western immunoblotting. Selected aortic specimens from 2 animals in each group were examined by histology and immunohistochemistry. The data are expressed as the mean +/- SEM and compared by the Student t test and ANOVA. Significance was established as P < .05. RESULTS: Lipid levels at 10 weeks were similar in the 3 groups except for higher triglyceride levels in RAPA-treated animals. eNOS expression was highest in RAPA-treated mice, but the p-eNOS to eNOS protein expression ratio was significantly greater in the SMV treatment group compared to both RAPA and controls (P < .05). Both Cav-1 and p-Cav-1 expression was significantly lower in the SMV-treated animals (P < .05) compared to mice treated with RAPA. CONCLUSIONS: Although eNOS expression was greatest in the RAPA-treated mice, the expression of p-eNOS was similar in the RAPA- and SMV-treated animals. The increase in eNOS induced by RAPA and the inverse relationship between p-eNOS and Cav-1 protein expression observed with SMV treatment suggest different mechanisms for the regulation of aortic eNOS expression in Apo-E mice by these 2 agents.

[Study of the extraction technique of volatile oil from Chinese herbs for manufacturing Xiaoerjianpixiaoshi oral solution].

OBJECTIVE: To determine the optimal extracting technique for the volatile oil from the Chinese herbs for manufacturing Xiaoerjianpixiaoshi oral solution. METHODS: Two steam distillation processes were carried out to extract the volatile oil from three Chinese herbs. UV-spectrophotometry method was used to determine the oil content in the distillate, and the mathematical model was established according to volatile oil distillation process by exponential curve regression analysis. RESULT: Direct extraction of the oil by means of steam distillation process was more workable, and the decrement of oil content conformed well with the exponential model. Collection of 2 volumes of the distillate resulted in the yield of volatile oil of 61.64%. CONCLUSION: The optimal extraction of the volatile oil can be resulted from immersion of the drugs in 8 volumes of water for 0.5 h and collection of 2 volumes of the distillate.

Weight perception, academic performance, and psychological factors in Chinese adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate weight perception and related psychological factors in Chinese adolescents. METHODS: A questionnaire on weight perception, academic performance, stress, hostility, and depression was completed by 6863 middle and high school students. Weight and height were measured. RESULTS: Overweight perception was related to school-related stress and depression in both girls and boys (P<0.01) and to hostility in boys (P<0.01). Perceived over-weight was related to lower GPA in girls only (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Distorted weight perception has a detrimental psychological impact on Chinese adolescents. These findings may contribute to the obesity research and to the development of future effective intervention programs in China.

An in vitro evaluation of radiation effects of different fractionated regimens by absolute cell count beads.

Recently, whole-body gamma-knife as a kind of radiotherapy equipment, characterized by precision of targeting irradiation, was applied in clinic. However, there is no conventional treatment regimen suitable for application to whole-body gamma-knife as yet. For providing reference to clinic to determine and optimize the treatment regimens for whole-body gamma-knife, a simple and quick bivariate flow cytometric approach was adopted to evaluate the killing effects of differently fractionated regimens of whole-body gamma-knife radiotherapy on the same cells, in which Annexin V-FITC (fluorescein-isothiocyanate) was used for discriminating apoptotic cells, propidium iodide (PI) for necrotic or dead cells and absolute cell count beads for absolute count of remnant surviving cells to examine the absolute killing effect. The results showed that the different survival rates of the same cells treated with different multifractionated irradiation regimens, relevant to clinical trial, might be sensitively, easily and rapidly evaluated by this approach. The evaluation of absolute killing effect, which is important to clinic, is very difficult to realize by a conventional clonogenic assay. For the approach adopted in the experiments, the cells in the treatment courses were not affected by non-treatment factors, such as cell migration, detachment, reattachment, bystander effect and medium factors encountered in a conventional clonogenic assay, and the conditions were more relevantly similar to cells in vivo. This approach might be used as a rapid cell survival assay especially in evaluating the absolute killing effect of a multifractionated treatment regimen, and also applied in the assessment in cytotoxic killing effect, such as chemotherapy.

Histochemical expression of sialoglycoconjugates in carcinoma of the papilla of Vater.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Cell surface glycosylation changes during oncogenesis and is thought to correlate with the malignant potential of cancers. To investigate the role of sialylation in carcinoma of the papilla of Vater, histochemical analyses were performed using sialic acid-binding lectins, Maackia amurensis leukoagglutinin and Sambucus nigra agglutinin. METHODOLOGY: Thirty-six papillary carcinoma tissues and 8 normal papillary tissues were subjected to lectin-histochemical staining. The relationship between lectin staining characteristics and clinicopathological parameters was statistically analyzed. RESULTS: Epithelial cells of glands in normal tissues were stained with Sambucus nigra agglutinin but not with Maackia amurensis leukoagglutinin. Of 36 papillary carcinoma tissues, 20 showed Maackia amurensis leukoagglutinin-positive staining in cancer cells, whereas all 36 were Sambucus nigra agglutinin-positive in cancer cells. According to Maackia amurensis leukoagglutinin-staining characteristics, the 36 cases were divided into two groups: positive (n=20) and negative (n=16). Statistical analysis indicated that positive staining in cancer cells was frequent in cases of lymph node metastasis (p=0.001) and in cases classified > or = T2 by TNM classification (p=0.036). CONCLUSIONS: Aberrant expression of sialoglycoconjugates recognized by Maackia amurensis leukoagglutinin might participate in lymph node metastasis and in an advanced stage of invasion in carcinoma of the papilla of Vater.
