[Mechanism of medical collagen for soft tissue augmentation].

This paper reports the fate of medical collagen after injected into rats. It is highly purified collagen. The persistence of it in rats is more than one year. It was found that fibroblasts and capillaries grew into the injections. Picrosirius-polarization demonstrated that the ration of type I and type III collagen changed. Fine green fibers of type III collagen were predominant at the early stage. Twelve months after implantation, most collagen fibers appeared as thick brilliant red fibers of type I collagen.

The effects of tetrandrine (TT) and polyvinylpyridine-N-oxide (PVNO) on gene expression of type I and type III collagens during experimental silicosis.

In the screening tests of drugs for silicosis in our laboratory, we found that TT, a type of alkaloid isolated from Stephania tetrandra, could inhibit the development of experimental silicosis of rats and the synthesis of collagen in rat lung. Chest X-rays of silicotic patients treated with TT for 1-3 years showed obvious changes. The silicotic nodules became smaller and shadows became clearer. PVNO was proved to have anti-silicotic effect on animal and clinically. This presentation reports the effect of them on collagen mRNA. Dot blot results showed that alpha 1 (I) and alpha 1 (III) mRNA levels increased significantly at 60 and 120 days after the rats were exposed to silica dust. The mRNA levels went down at 1 and 3 months after treated by TT and PVNO. In situ hybridization observation revealed that the silver grains of Type I and Type III collagen were scattered within the fibroblasts in cellular nodules and in thickened interstitium of silicosis tissue. The amounts of mRNA silver grains decreased in the lung tissue treated by TT and PVNO. It was suggested that TT and PVNO may inhibit the gene expression of collagen during silicosis.

Lectin histochemistry in psoriasis, lichen planus and seborrheic keratosis.

Lectin binding patterns in psoriasis, lichen planus and seborrheic keratosis lesions were studied using 14 different biotinyl lectins and avidin-horseradish peroxidase. Compared with normal epidermis, there were significant quantitative and qualitative differences, some of which were characteristic.

[Pattern recognition on the trace element spectrum in gastric cancer and peptic ulcer].

The trace element spectrum of gastric tissue and whole blood specimens from gastric cancer and peptic ulcer patients was recognized with pattern recognition technique in order to obtain the chemical information of gastric cancer. Thirty specimens were obtained from cancer patients in each of the 58 gastric tissues and 54 whole blood specimens. Five pathological types were divided into two groups: peptic ulcer and dysplasia as the ulcer group; well-differentiated, undifferentiated and mucinous carcinoma as the cancer group. The accuracy of recognizing the several spectra was 90%: nine trace element spectra (Cu, Zn, Ni, Co, Cr, Cd, Mn, Fe and Mg) for the tissue specimens from the cancer and ulcer groups; six (Cu, Zn, Mn, Co, Cr and Cd) for dysplasia and well-differentiated adenocarcinoma tissues; five (Cu, Ni, Cr, Cd and Fe) for the whole blood specimens from these two groups and six (Cu, Zn, Cr, Cd, Fe and Ni) for the whole blood specimens from dysplasia and peptic ulcer (including 10 normal individuals). The data were treated by non-linear mapping method and calculated by TRS-80 III type microcomputer.
