Brucellosis of the spine.

Eight cases of spinal brucellosis are included in this study. Diagnosis was established by positive serology. Back pain was the most common complaint. Functional disturbance in walking was observed in three cases; in two others this was because of impairment of cord function. Clinical hepatosplenomegaly was found in one case. Subclinical organomegaly was diagnosed in two other patients. Psoas abscess was identified by computed tomographic scan in two separate cases. Response to drug therapy and surgical decompression, when indicated, resulted in complete recovery in all patients.

Triggering of the finger at the flexor retinaculum.

An unusual case of trigger finger associated with paraesthesia of the hand is described. The site of triggering was at the flexor retinaculum consequent upon a tumour of the profundus tendon. Nerve conduction study of the median nerve revealed a co-existing incipient median neuritis.

Scoliosis after termination of vertebral growth.

A follow-up study of 34 cases shows that scoliosis after termination of vertebral growth is commonly a progressive condition. In the increase of scoliosis disc degeneration is the most important single factor. Further increase may result from lateral subluxation of the vertebra. Once disc degeneration is initiated further increase is inevitable. The results of the study also suggest that change in the disc is possibly more closely related to the nutritional and metabolic condition of the individual than to any other factor.
