Molecular scale contact line hydrodynamics of immiscible flows.

From extensive molecular dynamics simulations on immiscible two-phase flows, we find the relative slipping between the fluids and the solid wall everywhere to follow the generalized Navier boundary condition, in which the amount of slipping is proportional to the sum of tangential viscous stress and the uncompensated Young stress. The latter arises from the deviation of the fluid-fluid interface from its static configuration. We give a continuum formulation of the immiscible flow hydrodynamics, comprising the generalized Navier boundary condition, the Navier-Stokes equation, and the Cahn-Hilliard interfacial free energy. Our hydrodynamic model yields interfacial and velocity profiles matching those from the molecular dynamics simulations at the molecular-scale vicinity of the contact line. In particular, the behavior at high capillary numbers, leading to the breakup of the fluid-fluid interface, is accurately predicted.

Shear-enhanced yield stress in electrorheological fluids.

We report the enhancement of yield stress in electrorheological (ER) fluids by a shear-annealing method, using creep-recovery (CR) cycles under an external electric field. The enhancement depends on the duration and the strength of the applied shear stress, as well as on the number of the CR cycles. The shear-annealing method enables the particles in the ER fluid to form microstructures with an increased yield stress, manifest as better aligned and denser columns. For a sufficiently large number of CR cycles, with an optimal combination of stress duration and shear strength, a stable state can be obtained whereby shear deformation becomes elastic.

Optical measurement of azimuthal anchoring strength in nematic liquid crystals.

We have observed the azimuthal switching at the interface of nematic liquid crystals (LCs) and the aligning substrate, induced by the planar electric field of a fine comb electrode. Optical transmittance as a function of applied voltage was modeled by both the elastic theory with rigid anchoring and the Landau-de Gennes theory with the interfacial energy expression 1/2Wtr[(Q two down arrows -Q two down arrows (0))(2)], where Q two down arrows is the liquid crystal order parameter and Q two down arrows (0) is the surface order parameter induced by the aligning substrate. Optical data on the in-plane switching LC cells were found to differ qualitatively with the predictions of the rigid anchoring model but to agree well with those of the Landau-de Gennes theory. We obtain not only the strength W of the azimuthal anchoring, but also find the surface order parameter S(surface) to be 20-30 % less than that of the bulk. The optically measured azimuthal anchoring strength is in good agreement with the literature values determined through other means.

Full waveform inversion with optimal basis functions.

Based on the approach suggested by Tarantola, and Gauthier et al., we show that the alternate use of the step (linear) function basis and the block function (quasi-delta function) basis can give accurate full waveform inversion results for the layered acoustic systems, starting from a uniform background. Our method is robust against additive white noise (up to 20% of the signal) and can resolve layers that are comparable to or smaller than a wavelength in thickness. The physical reason for the success of our approach is illustrated through a simple example.

Subwavelength photonic band gaps from planar fractals.

We show by both experiment and theory that a specific class of planar conducting fractals possesses a series of self-similar resonances, leading to multiple gaps and pass bands for electromagnetic waves over an ultrawide frequency range. A double stack of these fractal patterns exhibits polarization-independent absolute gaps over a wide range of incidence angles. These characteristics are retained even when the fractal patterns are significantly subwavelength in all dimensions. In addition, the transmittance can be modulated by an external current source.

Ultrasound tunneling through 3D phononic crystals.

We report the study of ultrasound tunneling in 3D phononic crystals, consisting of fcc arrays of close-packed tungsten carbide beads in water. The transmission coefficient, phase velocity, and group velocity were measured along the [111] direction, allowing us to systematically investigate the tunneling of ultrasound at frequencies in the lowest band gap. Our experimental data are interpreted using multiple scattering theory, which provides a good explanation of our results. The effect of absorption and the difference between the tunneling of classical waves and quantum waves are discussed.

[Bio-remediation techniques of crude oil contaminated soils].

The bioremediation of soils contaminated by different types of petroleum were carried out with composting process in a prepared bed. By the measures of nutrient- and microbiological agent addition, and moisture- and pH control, an ideal environment for microbes were obtained. When total petroleum hydrocarbons, which consist of thin oil, high condensation oil, special viscous oil, and viscous oil, were in the range of 25.8-77.2 g.kg-1 dry soil, the petroleum removal rate could reach 38.37-56.74% by 2 months operation. The contents of aromatic hydrocarbon, asphaltum and resin were important factors controlling the degradation of petroleum. 6 fungi, 6 bacteria and 1 actinomyces were found to be the dominant strains for petroleum degradation. The results could provide theoretical bases for remediation of soil contaminated by petroleum.
