The tuneable complexation of gold nanoparticles.

Mixed monolayer protected gold nanoparticles have been fabricated incorporating 1,5-dialkyloxynaphthalene moieties that are capable of forming complexes with the tetracationic cyclophane cyclobis(paraquat-p-phenylene); electrochemical reduction of the cyclophane or the addition of tetrathiafulvalene results in disassembly of the complexes.

A tuneable self-complexing molecular switch.

[reaction: see text] A new self-complexing donor-acceptor system has been synthesized that has the propensity to undergo intramolecular decomplexation under thermal and electrochemical perturbation and upon addition of a competitive guest for the cyclophane's cavity.

Structural investigations of pyridin-4-yl indolizine modified beta-cyclodextrin derivatives as fluorescent chemosensors for organic guest molecules.

In order to investigate the substituent effects on their conformations and spectroscopic properties, a series of pyridin-4-ylindolizine modified beta-cyclodextrin derivatives were studied by 2D NMR (ROESY spectra) in D2O, circular dichroïsm, and fluorescence spectroscopy. It was found that the linked indolizin-beta-cyclodextrin compounds exhibited two types of conformations, as a function of the substituent, in which fluorescent moieties formed either an intramolecular complex or were not included in the hydrophobic cavity of the macrocycle. Under addition of organic guest species in a phosphate buffer at neutral pH, the variation of emission fluorescence intensity showed that these compounds are of significance for detection of volatile organic molecules and adamantane derivatives and might be used as molecular chemosensor.

Preliminary evidence of the role of hydrogen peroxide in the degradation of benzo[a]pyrene by a non-white rot fungus Fusarium solani.

In order to study the enzymatic mechanisms involved in the successive steps of BaP degradation by a Deuteromycete fungus Fusarium solani, we developed an indirect approach by using inhibitors of enzymes. We used either specific inhibitors of peroxidases (i.e. salicylhydroxamic acid) and of cytochrome P-450 (i.e. piperonyl butoxyde) or inhibitors of both enzymes (i.e. potassium cyanide). Surprisingly, no expected decrease of BaP degradation was observed with most inhibitors tested. On the contrary, more BaP was degraded. Only butylated hydroxytoluene, which acts as a free radical scavenger, inhibited BaP degradation. The inhibition of these enzymes, which use H(2)O(2) as a cosubstrate, might have resulted in an increase of hydrogen peroxide availability in the fungal cultures. This enhancement could induce formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) which might be the agents that initiate benzo[a]pyrene oxidation. This study proposed a hypothetic alternative metabolic pathway involved in PAH metabolism by Fusarium solani.

Total assignment and structure in solution of tetrandrine by NMR spectroscopy and molecular modelling.

High-resolution 1- and 2D NMR spectra of tetrandrine and molecular modelling were employed to characterise its structure in solution. Complete and unambiguous assignment of all proton and carbon resonance signals is reported. Scalar couplings were determined from dihedral angles with the Karplus equation. Inter-proton distances were evaluated from NOE correlation peaks. Comparison of simulated and X-ray conformations of tetrandrine reveals only small differences.
