[Local recurrence of rectal carcinoma].

The authors discuss a group of 88 dispensarized patients from a group of 153 operated during 1988-1992 on account of a malignant rectal tumour. Local regional relapses were found in 14 patients (15.9%). As the therapeutic results in local regional relapses are not satisfactory, the authors consider influencing of factors leading to more frequent local relapses after curative surgery of a malignant tumour as the fundamental problem.

[Endorectal sonography and computer tomography in the treatment of rectal malignancies].

The authors evaluate the contribution of computed tomography and endorectal sonography for the diagnosis and treatment in 32 patients from a total number of 84 patients treated on account of a rectal malignoma at the First Surgical Clinic of the Medical Faculty and Faculty Hospital in Olomouc during the three-year period between 1990 and 1992. The results of the examination were compared with the finding on operation and the histological examination. The authors maintain that both methods are useful but in different ways. So far the authors cannot express their opinion on indication of adjuvant therapy in conjunction with CT and endosonographic diagnosis.

[Treatment of glioblastoma multiforme].

The authors evaluate therapeutic results in 31 patients with the diagnosis of multiform glioblastoma. The comprehensive therapeutic procedure used as a rule which involves surgery, radiotherapy and in some instances also chemotherapy still gives very unsatisfactory results. The mean survival period of patients after surgery was 26.7 weeks and the mortality of patients within one month was 22.6%. Even radical surgery does not produce more favourable therapeutic results. Contemporary trends of preclinical and clinical research are focused in particular on different immunotherapeutic methods.

Contribution to the social importance and the epidemiology of osteoporosis.

It as concluded, we could state the fact that the occurrence of the osteoporosis--caused fracture of the vertebrae and of the proximal femur has the tendency to increase. The total number of osteoporotic fractures in the Czech Republic is close to that in the developed western countries. This illness causes people immense suffering and requires considerable financial expenses both during the hospital treatment immediately after the trauma and during the rehabilitation treatment and the nursing care. We consider that an early and precise diagnosis of osteoporosis made in time, as well as an appropriate treatment of this illness are the way out of all these problems.

The present therapeutic approach to acute complications of diverticula is disease is discussed by the authors. The poor results together with high lethality are pointed out provided that inflammatory states are surgically treated by means of simple derivation and drainage. The Hartmann's or Paul-Mikulicz's resection followed by passage reconstruction is considered to be the best approach and method.
