The fibrinolytic activity of 156 malignant and 36 benign solid tumors from autopsy and biopsy specimens was studied by the fibrin slide technique. The inhibitory activity against fibrinolysis was graded according to the lysis time of vascular tissues within the tumor. The results show that all malignant solid tumors, with the exception of prostate carcinoma, demonstrated varying degrees of inhibition of fibrinolysis. Persistently high inhibitory activity was found in squamous cell carcinoma of the esophagus, the respiratory tract, cervix uteri, and skin; carcinoma of uterus; colorectal carcinoma; small cell anaplastic carcinoma of lung; neuroblastoma, carcinoma of bile duct, while malignant tumors of the kidney show a lesser degree of inhibition. In contrast, with the exception of the hydatidiform mole, benign solid tumors show little or no inhibition. A similar absence of fibrinolytic activity is seen in metastatic disease. Further studies of the role of the fibrinolytic system in tumors seems warranted.
A study was carried out on 779 hospital patients in the Orthopaedic and Paediatric Unit of Queen Mary Hospital, Hong Kong. Patients who had no clinical evidence of liver disease, previous history of transfusion with blood or blood products and no major surgery in the past were entered into the study. Markers of previous exposure to Hepatitis B virus (HBV) were HBsAg, anti-HBc and anti-HBs (radioimmunoassay) were done. The results showed that (a) Chinese living in Hong Kong are exposed to HBV infection throughout life (b) horizontal transmission is the dominant mode of transmission and (c) cpronic HBsAg carriers probably do not carry HBV for life but may clear HBs antigenaemia with age.
Copper deficiency is reported in an infant of very low birthweight. It was characterised by extensive bone changes, severe neutropenia, and hypocupraemia. These manifestations could have been missed but for an intercurrent pneumonia which led to an x-ray of the chest.
The accumulation of alpha-aminoisobutyric acid by placental slices is increased dramatically upon prior incubation of the slices in amino acid-free, buffered saline. This increase is inhibited by inhibitors of protein synthesis and is accompanied by an increased V for the transport process. While alternative explanations are discussed, these data suggest that the incubation effect may be mediated through an increase in the number of available transport sites which are synthesized during the incubation period. Incubation with an amino acid mixture diminishes the increase as well as general protein synthesis, suggesting that a reduced availability of amino acids may initiate compensatory changes in the synthesis of cellular transport proteins.

We describe two adolescent girls with alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma arising from extremities who developed bilateral breast metastasis in their clinical course. In both cases, there was widespread systemic disease at initial presentation. Although complete remission was achieved on the 25th week post-chemotherapy initiation, the first patient developed breast metastasis in addition to systemic recurrence on the 44th week and expired. For the second patient, breast metastasis was noted in addition to systemic disease at initial presentation. Aggressive chemotherapy with autologous transplant and radiotherapy were given in addition to bilateral subcutaneous total mastectomy. The patient remained in complete remission 3 months post-therapy. We postulate that adolescent females with alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma of the extremities have a high risk of developing breast metastasis in the pubertal period, and aggressive multidisciplinary treatment is indicated.
