[Clinical value of CEA studies in patients with benign and malignant breast diseases with special reference to oncologic after care].

Carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) was assayed by radio immunoassay in serum of 87 patients with breast cancer and 85 patients with benign breast tumors from 1983 to 1986. The sensitivity of 43%, the specificity of 89%, the predictive values in regard to a positive assay result of 75% and in regard to a negative assay result of 67% was determined in consideration of a changed prevalence. It is referred to the importance of the estimation of CEA in the individual diagnosis, monitoring and follow up of patients with breast cancer. It is claimed the follow up for the premature recording of a recurrency the aid of CEA-estimation in always the same technical variant at the same patient.

[No age dependence of biochemical parameters in pregnancy].

The parameters AFP, progesterone, HPL, estriol, SP1 and beta-HCG were evaluated in the sera of 994 pregnant women. The women were in the 5th to 25th weeks of pregnancy. Evaluation was carried out by means of radioimmunoassay and radial immunodiffusion. In collecting the data, we wished to determine whether there was a relationship between the age of the pregnant woman and the changes in parameter values during the course of the pregnancy. With the exception of beta-HCG concentrations, no age dependency was observed. However, the beta-HCG/age interrelationship was minor and without practical consequence.

[Latex immunoassay].

The latex immunoassay can be considered a quickly practicable and simple methodic variant of the immunoassay. In this work principles and present capability of this assay are stated. Own experiments deal with the adsorption reaction of alkaline phosphatase and horseradish peroxidase at polystyrol respectively melanin formaldehyde lattices. The adsorption reaction of several lattices is partly extremely different. Problems concerning the construction of an assay useful for practical purposes are discussed.

Isolation of human alpha-1 fetoprotein (AFP) from induced abortion material.

The isolation of alpha-1 fetoprotein (AFP) from material of an induced abortion is described. AFP is purified by anion exchange chromatography on DEAE-Sephadex A 50, affinity chromatography on Con-A-Sepharose, and preparative electrophoresis on agarose gel. The yield is about 10% of the original material. The purity was demonstrated by agarose gel electrophoresis and two-dimensional immunoelectrophoresis. The high concentration of AFP in material of induced abortion makes it particularly suitable for deriving human AFP.

[Differentiation of the effect of diuretic urine extracts on the renal medullary blood flow (author's transl)].

In sodium depleted rats urine extracts of hydrated healthy human volunteer cause an increase in water excretion of 52% (p less than 0.005) and in sodium excretion of 45% (p less than 0.005). Cardiac output of the volumen loaded rats increases from 465 +/- 104 ml to 528 +/- 128 ml/kg-min (p=n.s.). Rb86 is used as an indicator for renal hemodynamics. Compared with controls there is an increase in blood flow through the outer medulla from 1.57 +/- 0.65 to 2.28 +/- 0.61 ml/g-min, through the inner medulla from 0.75 +/- 0.30 to 1.01 +/- 0.30 ml/g-min, and through the papillary tips from 0.85 +/- 0.04 ml to 1.21 +/- 0.25 ml/g-min. The experiments show that the diuretic/natriuretic urine extracts influence the hemodynamics of the renal medulla. However, since the significance level of the enhanced medullary blood flow is only low (p less than 0.1) it is impossible to find out the direct site of action of the urine extracts.

[Comparison between age-dependent (Wald alpha program) and age-independent (Ulm index) analysis program for prenatal detection of Down's syndrome with serum markers].

An age-dependent analytic program (Alpha-Software from Wald) was compared to an age-independent Index (Ulm-Index) in order to determine effectivity of detection in prenatal screening for Down's Syndrome in 7060 pregnant women. The rate of accuracy was similar in both analytic programs (6 from 7), but, the rate of false-positive results was twice as high using the Ulm-Index (14.7 versus 7.7%). The higher rate of amniocentesis necessary using the age-independent Ulm-Index apparently does not justify this method for prenatal screening of Down's Syndrome.
