Age-appropriate care: a system designed to make it happen.
In 1991, the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations governing board standards required that a process be designed to ensure that all individuals responsible for the assessment, treatment, or care of patients are competent in age-appropriate care. To meet this requirement, Humana Hospital-Overland Park in Overland Park, KS, developed a process to educate, evaluate, and report competence of staff to the governing board in an efficient and useful way. The focus of this article is to discuss how the process was developed and implemented successfully.

This article was written specifically to encourage hospitals that are initiating total quality management to include physicians at the beginning stages of the process. Including physicians from the outset can benefit the entire organization. Physicians, by the nature of their profession, have an important role in the quality of the patient care process.

Collaborative care: a professional model that influences job satisfaction.
At Overland Park Regional Medical Center/Columbia/HCA, Inc., the challenge was to implement a new patient care delivery model and measure the effect of this model on job satisfaction. In reviewing the literature, experts on case management/managed care noted a relationship between this form of practice model and high levels of job satisfaction. However, this relationship was not well illustrated through research studies. Analysis of this implementation plan demonstrated that managed care had a positive impact on job satisfaction.
