[Microscopic identification of the powder of roots of genus Adenophora. I. The roots of Sect. Basiphyllae and Sect. Pachydiscus].

This paper deals with the microscopic characteristics of the powder of the roots of Genus Adenophora. Eighteen species and subspecies have been studied. The results show that Sect. Basiphyllae and Sect. Pachydiscus can be identified easily based on the amount of sclerified cork cells, and 18 species, subspecies and varieties can be identified according to the amount, shape and thickness of the walls of the sclerified cork cells, the diameter and pit of the vessels, the number and shape of the secretion of the laticifers, and the number of inulin crystals.

Proliferative activity of epidermal and dermal T lymphocytes in mycosis fungoides.

BACKGROUND: Mycosis fungoides (MF) is histologically characterized by an accumulation of T lymphocytes (T cells) in both epidermis and dermis. However, the mechanism of the formation of Pautrier's microabscess or the maintenance of the epidermal T cells has not yet been clarified. OBJECTIVE: The rate of proliferation of these T cells was investigated. METHODS: The formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded sections from 9 cases of patch/plaque stage MF were immunostained with proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA). RESULTS: The PCNA-positive T cell nuclei were found both in the epidermis (including Pautrier's microabscesses) and dermis in all the specimens. The mean PCNA indices of the T cells were 20.2 +/- 10.6% (mean +/- SD) within the epidermis and 16.8 +/- 6.5% in the dermis, which was not statistically significantly different (p > 0.05). The ratio of the PCNA index between the epidermis and dermis was 1.3 +/- 0.6, which was not apparently correlated with the duration of the disease (8.4 +/- 5.1 years). CONCLUSION: These findings suggested that in situ proliferation might contribute to the epidermal T cell population resulting in the formation of Pautrier's microabscesses and an increase in dermal T cell volume during the course of the disease.

Proliferative activities in Spitz nevus compared with melanocytic nevus and malignant melanoma using expression of PCNA/cyclin and mitotic rate.

Proliferative activity in Spitz nevus (SN) was determined using proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) immunostaining and by assessing the mitotic rate. It was compared with that in compound melanocytic nevus (MN) and in malignant melanoma (MM). The PCNA index (number of positive cells/1,000 tumor cells) in SN was 72.8 +/- 45.5% (mean +/- SD), which was statistically significantly higher than that in MN (7.2 +/- 2.7%) and lower than that in MM (248.5 +/- 110%). The PCNA-positive cells in SN and MM were found both in dermal and junctional nests, while those in MN were found almost exclusively in the dermal nests. The mitotic rate in SN was 1.4 +/- 0.96%, while it was nothing in MN and 5.4 +/- 4.2% in MM. There was a statistically significant correlation between the PCNA index and the mitotic rate at r = 0.8946, p < 0.001. The PCNA index, however, appeared to show the proliferative activity of SN more clearly than did the mitotic rate.

Age-related proliferative activity in dermal melanocytic naevi detected by PCNA/cyclin expression.

A monoclonal antibody was used to demonstrate proliferating cell nuclear antigen in routine, formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue sections of dermal melanocytic naevi, including naevus naevocellularis partim lipomatodes, in different age-groups. The labelling indices of the melanocytic naevus cells were < 1% of those in the overlying epidermal basal cells, and showed a statistically significant decrease with ageing, and also in naevus naevocellularis partim lipomatodes, whereas the indices of the basal cells in the overlying interfollicular epidermis did not show any age-related changes.

Fertility pattern of women in China: a parity progression analysis.

"Using the 1% sample data from China's fourth census and [the] period parity progression method...,this paper analyzes the reproductive age and parity patterns of Chinese women. In addition to the commonly used period parity progression and the total fertility rate obtained through the usage of this method, some other frequently ignored means of deducing and calculating statistical indexes are introduced here."

[Textual and herbal studies on shashen and qini (Adenophora spp.)].

This paper reports the origins of the Chinese traditional drugs nanshashen and beishashen, as well as the original plants of shashen, xingyeshashen, xiyeshasen and qini recorded in the bencaological works of the past dynasties. Our study shows that shashen is Adenophora stricta, both xingyeshashen and qini are A. hunanensis and xiyeshashen is A. paniculata.

Birth spacing patterns and correlates in Shaanxi, China.

This study shows that most women in Shaanxi Province, China try to have their first birth as soon as possible after their first marriage, and that the length of the interval between marriage and first birth is strongly correlated with the woman's age at first marriage. The length of the second and third birth intervals and the likelihood of going on to have a second or third birth are strongly influenced by the sex composition of children already born, the survival time of the child initiating the interval, the duration of breastfeeding, and the woman's occupation. There is significant regional variation in the length of birth intervals and in the prevalence of second and third births in Shaanxi. The findings indicate that China's one-child policy is far from being universally accepted in Shaanxi, including its urban areas. The persistence of many social, economic, institutional, and cultural factors promoting high fertility poses many obstacles to further fertility decline.

The effects of breastfeeding and birth spacing on child survival in China.

Using data from the In-depth Fertility Survey, conducted in Shanghai Municipality and Shaanxi Province, People's Republic of China, in April 1985, this study shows that breastfeeding and birth spacing have significant effects on child survival in Shaanxi, but not in Shanghai (controlling for potential confounding factors and reverse causality). The effect of breastfeeding decreases with age. Introducing proper supplemental food is very important for child survival in Shaanxi, where a high proportion of children are breastfed exclusively for much too long, sometimes up to nine months. An increase in the length of the previous birth interval improves child survival in Shaanxi significantly, especially for high-order children, and the first child has the highest survivorship in both Shanghai and Shaanxi. The effects of subsequent birth intervals are statistically significant in Shaanxi, but have a small actual impact on child survival in the first few years of life, since the arrival of a sibling does not affect the index child's risk of dying in the first few months of life, when the mortality rate is extremely high.

IUD discontinuation patterns and correlates in four counties in north China.

This study presents an in-depth analysis of IUD discontinuation patterns and correlates in four counties in North China for the years following the introduction of provincial family planning regulations and the family planning target responsibility system. It is based on contraceptive-use data from 8,630 rural married women younger than 35. The gross IUD discontinuation rate was low among women with one child. The pattern of discontinuation was determined mainly by individual demographic profile and institutional variables. IUD users with two or more children tended to undergo sterilization after the introduction of the regulations of the late 1980s. These counties appear to have been successful in shaping couples' contraceptive behavior, but at the expense of individual choice. The effect of introducing copper IUDs may be smaller than expected unless providers' training is substantially improved and couples' fertility preferences altered.
