[An unusual eyelid tumor (author's transl)].

A 68-year-old man presented with a rapidly growing upperlid tumor which due to multiple recurrences was excised 5 times within 4 years; and ultimately invaded the orbit. An orbital exenteration was performed. The unusual clinical course and the A-Scan sonographical findings of this tumor were most probably due to its uncommon histological features which proved to be an undifferentiated squamous cell carcinoma with features of Epithelioma metatypique intermediaire Darier.

[Orbital tumor in Goodpasture's syndrome (author's transl)].

Diplopia and unilateral exophthalmus of a female patient, aged 34, with Goodpasture's syndrome were the indication for echographic examination. A- and B-scan echography revealed a diffuse retrobulbar tumor carrying the characteristics of the sarcoma/lymphoma/pseudotumor group.

[Special sound probe for foreign body localisation (author's transl)].

A recently developed sound probe (10 MHz and 3 mm diameter) is suitable for sparing preoperative localisation of foreign bodies in perforated eyes; especially mural foreign bodies can be exactly located intraoperatively. Followed scleral incision foreign bodies can be extracted on the optimal route.

Solid tissue model for the standardization of the echo-ophthalmograph 7200 MA (Kretztechnik).

After discussion of the biologic basis of echographic tissue differentiation and of the required standardization of the ultrasonic diagnostic device by means of tissue models (citrated blood), a technical standard is presented. This solid tissue model, which can be used an unlimited number of times, enables the investigator to determine or check the tissue sensitivity of his instrument at any time easily and quickly. The model consists of a synthetic resin (Wacker Silgel 504) to which a certain number of microbeads (glass beads S-100) are added before it hardens. The acoustic properties of this technical standard correspond to those of the biologic standard (citrated blood) including all important factors such as reflectivity, degree of scattering and sound attenuation.

Ten-year study on clinical echography in intraocular disease.

During the past 10 years, clinical echography has been developed to a valuable and even indispensable examination method with which more than 25 various conditions and diseases or groups of lesions within the globe can be differentiated (the majority of them with a high degree of realiability and accuracy). Two signigicant steps to this end were the optimizing of both instrumentation and examination techniques as well as the standardization of the A-scan method. A few of the major conditions and diseases of the posterior segment of the globe, e.g. retinal detachments and retinoblastomas, are discussed in detail in this study, while ocular foreign bodies, malignant melanomas and other choroidal tumors and pseudo-tumors are discussed in two other studies presented in these proceedings (see pp. 109,141). At the end of this 10-year period, clinical echography, although quite mature, is still a very young examination method which can and will be further improved to an even more reliable and at the same time easier technique. Both A-and B-scan techniques are important for the diagnosis of intraocular diseases: the (standardized) A-scan method for a reliable detection as well as quantitative and kinetic evaluation, the B-scan technique for a better demonstration of the shape and topographic relationship of lesions in the vitreous and at the posterior pole.
