OBJECTIVE: To determine which nursing support behaviors new mothers rate as most helpful in assisting them to cope with labor. DESIGN: A retrospective study using quantitative and qualitative approaches, including a ranking of means and a content analysis. SETTING: The postpartum unit of a tertiary-care hospital in eastern Canada. PARTICIPANTS: Eighty postpartum women, most of whom were married, employed, and 20-33 years of age. INTERVENTIONS: Within 72 hours of their labor women rated 25 nursing support behaviors. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The perceived degree of helpfulness of 25 nursing support behaviors. RESULTS: All 25 behaviors were perceived as helpful. The most helpful behaviors included making the woman feel cared about as an individual, giving praise, appearing calm and confident, assisting with breathing and relaxing, and treating the woman with respect. Behaviors in the emotional support category were the most helpful. CONCLUSIONS: Nurses can assist women to cope with the stress of labor. They must use a high degree of interpersonal skills in the care of laboring women in addition to being technically competent.
To ensure that the mission of their sponsoring religious institute--the Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady--remains central to the facility' services, employees of Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center, Baton Rouge, LA, commissioned the Mission Effectiveness Education Task Force to initiate a meaningful hospital-wide program that would bring Christian values into focus and put the spirit of the mission into daily practice. The goals of the one-day workshop---"Celebrate the Mission"--are: To articulate the central values of Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center to all employees To promote the Franciscan Missionary of Our Lady's mission of a healthcare ministry To acknowledge and celebrate the creation of a vision by the sisters and the staff To allow a deep integration of the mission into daily work decisions To ensure that all of Our Lady of the Lake's 2,900 employees experience Celebrate the Mission, the program is offered twice a month but limited to groups no larger than 35 persons. Many employees, board members, and administrators facilitate Celebrate the Mission sessions.
A major secreted aspartic proteinase from Candida albicans has been crystallized in the presence of inhibitors to prevent autodegradation. With pepstatin a cleaved form of the enzyme was nevertheless found in the crystals whereas with the inhibitor A70450 the enzyme remained intact. The crystals containing pepstatin were not suitable for X-ray data collection while the crystals containing A70450 grew by vapour diffusion as tetragonal bipyramids, space group P4(3)2(1)2 (or P4(1)2(1)2), a = b = 76.2 A, c = 126.1 A, with one molecule in the asymmetric unit and they diffract to beyond 2.2 A.

Worker notification involves informing current and past employees of their risk of disease. It also involves suggesting ways to reduce their risks. The asbestos screening and education programs designed for the building and construction trades unions were a national multisite effort that focused on improving the health of eligible union members and retirees at high risk of developing asbestos-related disease. The asbestos screening and education programs were made available to "high-risk," asbestos-exposed local union members through the efforts of a number of international unions, including the International Union of Elevator Constructors and the Laborers' International Union of North America--both affiliates of the Building and Construction Trades Department, AFL-CIO. Consultation and program assistance in developing and implementing these programs were provided by the Occupational Health Foundation, a labor-sponsored, nonprofit organization with a multidisciplinary safety and health staff. Program components included identification of "high-risk" individuals, notification of risk, education, medical screening, legal referral, and various support services. Community-based physicians and/or physician-staffed mobile testing units provided services on a contractual basis according to a standardized medical protocol. Between 1988 and 1991, 2,136 union members and retirees from 89 local unions affiliated with the Elevator Constructors or the Laborers were screened in 59 regional programs. A general description and historical perspective are offered concerning program implementation, integration into existing union infrastructures. Emphasis is placed on the role of the unions in advancing members' interests when dealing with the health and socioeconomic implications of asbestos-related disease.
The structures of uniformly 13C-labeled beta-glucan octa- and undeca-oligosaccharides enzymatically prepared by the yeast cell wall glucanosyl transferase of Candida albicans were characterized by using a combination of HCCH-COSY, HCCH-TOCSY, and HMBC experiments. The oligosaccharide structures indicate that the cell wall glucanosyl transferase cleaves two glucosyl units from the reducing end of the initial linear beta(1-->3) penta-oligosaccharide and subsequently transfers the remainder to another oligosaccharide at the nonreducing end via a beta(1-->6) linkage. These results indicate that the combined action of cell wall glucanase and glucanosyl transferase activities could not only introduce intrachain beta(1-->6) linkages within a single glucan strand, but also result in cross-linking of two initially separate glucan strands with concurrent introduction of intrachain beta(1-->6) linkages. Since isolated fungal membranes only synthesize linear beta(1-->3) glucan strands, wall-associated enzymes probably participate in the assembly of the final wall glucan structure during cell growth and division.
Changes in platelet indices (platelet count and platelet size) and PCV associated with thyroid disease were studied in 7 dogs with hypothyroidism and 21 cats with hyperthyroidism that were admitted to the veterinary teaching hospital. Compared with control (euthyroid) dogs, dogs with hypothyroidism had higher platelet count (P = 0.003), smaller platelet size (P = 0.01), and lower PCV (P = 0.02). Comparison of the group of hyperthyroid cats with a group of similarly aged, clinically normal cats with normal thyroxine values indicated that the group of hyperthyroid cats had significantly (P = 0.03) higher mean platelet size than did control cats, but differences were not found in mean platelet count or PCV. Results of this investigation indicate that the changes in platelet size reported in human beings with thyroid endocrinopathies also are found in animals so-affected. Although the pathogenesis of platelet abnormalities in animals with thyroid derangement is unclear and likely is multifactorial, the observed relation between platelet and erythrocyte production in this group of dogs is consistent with reports of an inverse relation between thrombocytopoiesis and erythropoiesis in iatrogenically hyperthyroid mice and in mice exposed to hypoxia.
