[Ovarian surface epithelium and its histogenic relation to ovarian cancer].

Approximately 80 to 90 per cent of adult ovarian cancers are assumed to originate from ovarian surface cells. A series of morphological and biochemical studies has been recently conducted to test this. The ovarian surface epithelium shows permanent morphological changes such as crypts, inclusion cysts, villous processes and different forms of müllerian epithelium. The unique nature of ovarian surface changes and their abrupt disappearance in immediately adjacent mesothelia suggest that local factors may play an important part in modifying the growth and morphogenesis of the epithelium of the ovarian surface. Whether these endogenous and/or exogenous factors may also induce surface neoplasia is a moot point.

[Basal cell nevus syndrome in roentgen diagnosis of the skull].

Besides uni- and multilocular jaw cysts the Gorlin-Goltz-syndrome shows other characteristic radiographic findings which help to ensure diagnosis. These are particularly calcification of the falx cerebri and a so called "bridging" between processus clinoideus anterior und posterior of the sella turcica. The importance of early diagnosis is stressed.

[Effect of milk constituents on lipid metabolism].

The cholesterol lowering effect of various milk constituents was examined in six trials with growing pigs. Each trial is described. By means of main component analysis 44 factors were tested in order to see whether they influenced the lipid metabolism. We observed that there was no specific component in the milk which showed a cholesterol lowering effect. Milk and milk constituents change the nutrient composition of the food and can, e.g. by means of the changed amino acid pattern, indirectly lower the lipid content in the blood.

[Value of the early detection of endometrial cancer by intra-uterine cell sampling with the Mi-Mark spiral].

This report describes the results of a feasibility study of detection endometrial carcinoma in a population of 256 women, age 45 and above (221 patients with abnormal bleeding, 35 asymptomatic women). All of the asymptomatic women had a negative endometrial cytology. The microscopic examination of the curettings of patients with abnormal bleeding was correlated to the endometrial cytology. 13 adenocarcinomas, 2 sarcomas, but only 3 of 8 adenomatous hyperplasias, 2 of 4 circumscribed adenocarcinomas and none of 2 high differentiated adenoakanthomas were predicted by the cytological examination. The endouterine cell sampling is only effective in exophytic or broad endophytic growing adenocarcinomas. For precancerous conditions or early cancerous changes is the endouterine cell sampling not quite accurate. The routine use of endometrial cytology from the uterine cavity area is apparently not justified for early detection of endometrial carcinomas.

[Experiences with an industrially prepared, fully balanced domestic tube-diet (Nutrodrip) in comparison with usual clinical kitchen tube feeding in postoperative nutrition of jaw surgery patients].

In a clinical study on postoperative nutrition the effects of a industrially prepared native physiological diet were compared with hospital-made nasogastric tube diet in patients who underwent maxillo-facial surgery. Of particular interest were tolerance, healing process, side effects and laboratory parameters. Contents and practicability of the industrially prepared diet fulfilled the expectations. Moreover, the advantage of availability at any time, exact balance and dosage, sterility and stability is evident. Despite lower input of industrially made diet decrease in bodyweight did not differ in both groups. There was also no evident diet-related difference in laboratory parameters. Although some patients felt heart burn, early satiation and subjective rejection against a 'sterile bottled diet', the use of the tested industrially prepared native physiological diet seems to be convenient especially in hospitals where fabrication of balanced nasogastric tube diet is not possible. Our suggestions for improvement of acceptance have already been taken into consideration by the manufacturer.

Relations between axon length and axon caliber. "Is maximum conduction velocity the factor controlling the evolution of nerve structure"?

A search was made for any existent relationship between the length of a nerve fiber and the caliber of its axon. This was done in the hope of defining morphological parameters useful for assessing conduction time. Four fiber populations were examined: (1) phrenic fibers in rat and rabbit during different phases of body growth; (2) phrenic fibers of mature animals of greatly different body size including mouse and cow; (3) rat intercostal nerves which vary in length by a factor exceeding 5 due to the funnel-shape of the thorax; and (4) ventral root fibers of the cow. In all of these fiber populations, there was no evidence for a direct relationship between the length of a fiber and its caliber. Rather, a tendency was noted for fiber caliber to approach certain ceilings independent of length. These data, seen in conjunction with other information on fiber structure, cast serious doubt on the widely accepted concept that maximum conduction velocity is the factor controlling nerve structure. A much more likely factor controlling the structure of myelinated nerve fibers is the capacity to modulate information by frequency coding of impulses.
