[Endoscopic treatment of colorectal polyps in children].

In paediatric patients colorectal polyps are less frequent than in adults. In infancy, more than 70% of colorectal polyps are non-neoplastic (juvenile or amartomatous). Intestinal and pharmacological preparation are different in children with respect to adults. In infants and young children, endoscopic polypectomy is performed under general anaesthesia. From the technical viewpoint, there are no substantial differences between adult and paediatric patients. Moreover, the fact that juvenile polyps are not neoplastic in nature, generally influences the modalities of follow up. In the Division of Endoscopy of the I.N.T., from 1974 to 1987, 33 colorectal polyps were removed in 20 patients (13 M, 7 F). The age range was 2 to 14 years. Only one complication was observed: a post-polypectomy bleed, which was treated endoscopically. Histologically, there were 18 juvenile polyps, 6 hyperplastic polyps, 1 tubular adenoma; 8 polyps (6 in the same patient) were not retrieved.

[Laparoscopy in oncological pediatrics].

Laparoscopy permits direct inspection of the peritoneal cavity. Its role is very important in oncology both in the adult and in the pediatric patient. From 1973 to 1985, 147 laparoscopies were performed on 137 patients, aged 2-16; indications were: definition of the nature of neoplastic disease in 8 cases, staging of known neoplasia in 132, restaging in 7. On Hodgkin's disease, splenic involvement in 8/113 cases was revealed by laparoscopy with biopsy. Histological examination was positive in 4 out of 22 cases of ovarian tumors. Morbidity was 1.2%. Although a laparotomy performed after laparoscopy has shown some false negatives, in most cases the clinical and instrumental follow-up has proved reliability of laparoscopic examination.

[Various air pollutants in Torino].

The trend of concentrations of some pollutants (total particulate, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), benzo(a)pyrene (BaP), chromium, nickel, lead, vanadium) in the urban air of Turin for the years 1986-87-88 was studied. The air was sampled daily by glass fiber's filters; a ponderal determination of total particulate was made; PAH was dosed by gas-chromatography and by mass spectrometry, metals was determined by atomic absorption spectrometry. These are the values of the three years mean concentration: total particulate 156.3 micrograms/mc, PAH 27.2 ng/mc, B(a)P 2.16 ng/mc, Cr 28.6 ng/mc, Ni 40.5 ng/mc, Pb 1.37 micrograms/mc, V 55.2 ng/mc. Finally, we try to calculate the conjectural carcinogenic effect of the B(a)P for the residents of Turin.

Cytologic diagnosis of pulmonary carcinoma on bronchoscopic brushing material.

The material obtained by brushing procedures under visual control from 370 consecutive patients with histologically confirmed primary carcinoma of the lung who underwent bronchoscopy was examined cytologically. The sputum of 276 of these patients was also investigated. The overall sensitivity of the bronchoscopically obtained cytology was 0.67; however, the values were 0.78 and 0.28, respectively, for the cases with and without visible lesions of the bronchi. Sputum examination enhanced the sensitivity to 0.79 overall and to 0.84 and 0.61, respectively, for the two groups, with a greater benefit for the group with negative bronchoscopy. The overall cytologic typing accuracy for 252 cases was 0.66, with a range of 0.19 to 0.86, depending on the histologic type. Typing failures were essentially related to adenocarcinomas and large-cell carcinomas.

[Probable aerodiffusion of pathogens in the vicinity of an oxidation basin belonging to a purification plant].

The Authors intent was to study the convenience of exposing selective media for identification of finely atomized pathogenic bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus, in the proximity of oxidation basins of the mechanical surface aeration-type purification plants, and also to assess the percentage of pathogenic elements spread throughout the air. The Authors consider the use of elective or selective media for the isolation of bacteria in the air hardly important and useful. But since the dishes exposed in the vicinity of the liquid sewage oxidation basin have revealed the presence of polluting aerosols, it would seem convenient to provide for an in-depth study on the mechanism governing the spreading of aerosol particles throughout the air, in relation to the estimate of the meteorological and climatic parameters of the area and to a survey of the persons therein exposed.
