[A tapeworm infection with fatal outcome (author's transl)].

Parasitoses of the intestinal tract are rare in Europe. Their diagnosis is difficult since the general symptoms are frequently only little pronounced or completely lacking. On the other hand, the course of the disease may be fatal. Such cases from the literature and our own observations are intended to call to memory the differential diagnosis of intestinal parasitosis.

[Human nitrogen balance under oral administration of egg proteins].

Long-term nitrogen balance periods over 17 and 24 days were performed in 5 healthy volunteers (2 females, 3 males) in order to evaluate the requirements under varying input of whole egg protein. Nitrogen balances are consquently influenced in a positive or negative way by increased or decreased protein intake. The estimation of protein requirements, an important precondition for evaluation of biological value of proteins and/or amino acid mixtures, however, is not influenced as far as experiments are conducted in the linear region between input and balance. In spite of considerable variations of protein intake maximum alterations of requirements of 20, and average ones of 10 per cent points are shown. Even under most unfavorable conditions of comparison potato egg pattern of amino acids administered orally and parenterally exceeds egg protein, given orally, at least by 7, atthe most by 27 points, and reported values of amino acids according to ROSE'S or to the plasma pattern by 36, 23, and 21 points.

[Comparative balance study of the value of amino acids for humans after oral and parenteral input].

The biological value (BV) of an amino acid mixture, according to the potato-egg principle (KE), was determined in the case of oral and parenteral input with three healthy adult volunteers in a long-term complete test of metabolic balance: KE-amino acid pattern with oral input, BV=134.4; KE-amino acid pattern with parenteral input, BV= 131.4; egg protein (reference) with oral input, BV=100. The long-term metabolic balance experiment with human subjects under criteria of compensated nitrogen balances was used to test nitrogen substances like whole egg protein and amino acids (under parenteral and oral input); the BV of a nitrogen substance is defined as the reciprocal value of the minimum nitrogen requirements compared with the reference protein whole egg, which is set at 100. The results confirm in principle (1) the almost identical utilization and value of identical nitrogen substances (amino acids), even with different ways of input with oral and parenteral nutrition of the human being, and (2) the ability of reproduction of the BV of the optimal potato-egg protein mixture (65% potato nitrogen + 35% egg nitrogen with oral input: BV = 137.6) by means of simulation through corresponding L-amino acids, considering the modification necessary for technical as well as physiological reasons, which concern the non-essential part of the pattern.

[Classification and supervision of hyperlipemias (author's transl)].

Different methods for determination and classification systems of serum lipoproteins were used and compared in 300 patients with hyperlipidemia. The procedures and methods were examined to find out which would provide a useful classification for diagnosis and therapy. Lipid electrophoresis on agarose gel gave no reliably reproducible typing. With acetate and polyacetate foils, Type llb was not recognizable in the majority of cases. Neither the determination of beta-cholesterol after polyanion precipitation nor quantitative lipid electrophoresis calculating the values as lipoprotein lipid gave type determinations which completely agreed with the ultracentrifuge, but the best coincidence with the ultracentrifuge was obtained with these two methods. The second method is chiefly suitable for supervision.

[Nitrogen balances and clinical development in the case of post-operative infusion therapy with solution of essential and complete amino acids ].

Nitrogen balance was studied in eleven patients receiving parenteral nutrition after operation. None of nine patients showed evidence of azotaemia. In two patients suffering from renal insufficiency in a stage of compensated retention there was no deterioration of metabolism as an immediate consequence of operation. The use of essential amino acids did not reveal any advantage over the infusion of a complete amino acid solution of high value.

[Optimal protein substitution in parenteral nutrition (author's transl)].

In three healthy probands oral whole egg and parenteral amino acid administration were compared by means of nitrogen balance studies. For the amino-acid solution produced according to the potato-egg pattern and administered intravenously the high biological value of 131.4 was obtained in comparison with a value of 100 for the oral egg protein administration. This confirms recommendations to use aminoacid solutions in parenteral nutrition which are prepared according to the principles of nutrition physiology.

[Diabetes mellitus and microcirculation. Significance of diabetic angiopathy for the prognosis and course of diabetes mellitus, possibilities and bases of angiologic therapy].

The importance of diabetic angiopathy for prognosis and course of diabetes mellitus, possibilities and basis of angiological therapy Complications originating from the vascular system determine life expectancy of the diabetic patient. He is particularly endangered by apoplexy, heart attack, arteriosclerosis of the lower extremities, retino- and nephropathy. Microangiopathy is a specific diabetic problem, the development of which shows a clear dependency on the quality of metabolism. Conventional therapy of circulatory problems today is less concerned with the vascular system than with the qualities of blood viscosity. In this context, viscosity is of main concern. Particularly in microcirculation viscosity is dependent on blood factors such as: haematocrit, plasmaviscosity, erythrocytes and thrombocytes. Their changed behaviour results, in the case of diabetes mellitus, in an increase in viscosity partly dependent on metabolism. A promising concept of treatment is available by pharmaceutically influencing the alteration of erythrocytes.

[Preparation for colonoscopy with a new fully balanced bulk-free peptide diet].

A new, totally balanced bulkage-free peptide diet was imposed on 20 patients preparing ror coloscopy. Because of the entire absorption of the oligopeptides by way of the intestinal mucous membrane, the application of this diet brings about the same good results as the administration of the bulkage-free diets containing pure L-aminoacids ("astronaut's nutrients"), which so far were provided for this purpose. Apart from a lower osmolarity and lower costs, the bulkage-free peptide diet offers, above all, the advantages of a definitely better flavor. Therefore, new possibilities for a long-term nutrition with a bulkage-free diet are seen.

[Gastroscopy and coronary risk (author's transl)].

In 50 patients, both outpatients and inpatients, electrocardiograms were recorded in different phases during esophagogastroscopy. The changes which occurred, such as tachycardia, arrhythmias, and disorders of repolarization are discussed. The increased frequency during the initial stage of the endoscopy, which may assume an already dangerous dimension for patients with coronary heart disease, merits particular attention.
