Survival of preimplantation embryos in the uteri of mice induced to superovulate and subsequently ovariectomized.

The effect of ovariectomy-induced hormonal deprivation for 3, 5, 7 or 9 days on the capacity of the mouse uterus to maintain large numbers of blastocysts was studied. Both the percentage of pregnant females and the number of embryos per female decreased from 90% with 18.89 embryos per female after 3 days to 40%, with 4.63 embryos per female, after 9 days of hormonal deprivation. The capacity of embryos from superovulating donors to implant in pseudopregnant recipients was unimpaired during the first 5 days of hormonal deprivation but was significantly impaired after 7 days.

Determination of male fertility in thirteen commercial lines of broiler parents.

Male reproductive capacity evaluated as percent fertility, hatchability, and duration of fertility was assessed for cockerels of 13 commercial broiler lines at 39 and 59 weeks of age using White Leghorn females. For each age the eggs were collected for 21 days following a second insemination of females with .05 ml of undiluted semen. With the exception of duration of fertility the differences among strains were not significant, suggesting that the differences among males within a strain were greater than those among strains for fertility and hatchability. The average percent fertility for a 4-day and 7-day postinsemination interval was 92.1% and 89.9% for Age I and 87.7% and 84.3% for the respective fertilities for Age II. The differences due to age were not significant. However, age had a significant effect on hatchability of settable eggs during 4 days (85.5% vs. 78.2%) and 7 days (83.2% vs. 74.9%) following artificial insemination (AI). The percentage of hatched chicks decreased progressively after day 7 following AI due to the greater incidence of infertile eggs and gradual increase in early embryonic mortality. The duration of fertility among broiler lines ranged between 9.7 to 13.9 days. The significant interaction between strain and age for duration of fertility reflected the changes in ranking among various broiler strains.

The effect of sodium pentobarbital on the preservation of fertilizing capacity of turkey spermatozoa.

The effect of sodium pentobarbital in modified glycine citrate extender on the preservation of fertilizing capacity of turkey spermatozoa was tested. Extended semen samples were stored for 6 or 24 hr at 4 C before insemination. Although there was an indication that the addition of 120 mg of sodium pentobarbital per 1 liter of extender was beneficial at 24 hr storage, the difference was not statistically significant.

The effect of sodium pentobarbital on the fertility of fowl spermatozoa.

The effect of three levels of sodium pentobarbital in modified glycine-citrate extender on the preservation of the fertilizing capacity of fowl spermatozoa was tested. Extended semen samples were stored for 24 and 48 hr at 2 C before insemination. Insemination with semen stored for 24 hr in the extender containing 120 mg of sodium pentobarbital provided the best results (73.9%).

The effect of caproic acid, handling technique and storage times on the fertility of fowl spermatozoa.

The effects of three levels of caproic acid in glycine-citrate extender on preservation of fertilizing capacity of fowl spermatozoa were tested. Extended semen stored for 6 and 28 hours was used for insemination in diluted or reconcentrated forms. The results indicated that semen stored in the extender with the highest concentration of caproic acid provided superior fertility and showed the importance of proper handling of hens during insemination.

In vitro development of secondary blastodiscs from dispersed blastoderm cells of Gallus domesticus.

A study of the in vitro growth of embryonic structures from dispersed blastoderm cells is reported. The specific type of blastoderm cells with the capability of growing on the coverslip developed into the discoidal embryonic structures resembling those of avian species. The glass surface was apparently an initiator of differentiation into at least three types of cells specifically distributed in the blastodisc. Groups of structures formed were evaluated at 6, 12, 24 and 36 hours to study the developmental pattern in vitro and to estimate the number of cells per structure. Microscopic examination of the area pellucida revealed that all three basic germ layers were established after 24 hours of incubation in vitro. The 36 hour stage was represented by bulky growth of mesodermal-like cells and changes in hypoblast layer where some of the cells degenerated and some were transformed to mesenchymal spindle-like cells.

Legless--a lethal condition in the domestic fowl.

The abnormality resulting in legless condition which appeared in one pedigree mating in the R.I.R. stock is reported. The condition was lethal to the affected embryos between five and seven days of the incubation period. The matings carried out suggested that the condition was not hereditary but since only two males were raised from the original mating it cannot be stated with certainty.

The lethal nature of "wiry" mutation in the domestic fowl.

A study of the effect of normal environmental conditions on newly hatched chicks with the feather mutant described as "wiry" (Fiser et al., 1973) was carried out. The results indicated that the abnormality should be classified as a potential facultative lethal expressed after hatching.
