Prescriptive authority for psychiatric clinical specialists: framing the issues.

Prescriptive authority is of increasing interest to advanced practice psychiatric nurses. A growing number of states have passed legislation authorizing prescriptive authority for this specialty group. In preparing for an orderly assimilation of this intervention into psychiatric nursing's existing scope of practice, it is important to understand some of the unique issues facing the specialty. This report provides an overview of prescriptive practice legislation, legal issues associated with prescribing psychotropic medication to psychiatric clientele, and prescriptive activities common to the specialty practice of psychiatry. Issues for the specialty of psychiatric nursing are reviewed and recommendations are offered for an action plan.

Firing for cause.

When a nurse is hired, the employer hopes the relationship will be mutually beneficial. When this is not the case, the employer's knowledge of the at will rule is critical. The author discusses the at will rule, good faith dealings, and the conditions under which the employee can be dismissed for cause.

What is OSHA and how does it impact i.v. nurses?

A brief history of why the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) was created and the purpose of OSHA is provided. Both employee and employer rights and responsibilities are discussed briefly. The process for enacting standards intended to protect employees is described followed by a detailed discussion of OSHA's standard, which relates directly to the practice of intravenous nurses.
