[Chemical composition and antimicrobial activity of 2 Peruvian plants].

In this work we determined the hydrocarbon , sterol and triterpenoid composition of two plants used as antibacterial drug in traditional peruvian medicine, Berberis rariflora and Chenopodium multifidum. In both plants the presence of unsaturated hydrocarbons is very low, whereas the presence of odd hydrocarbons is considerable. The delta 7 sterols are more abundant than delta 5 sterols. We found also a great presence of stigmasterol derivatives in both plants, whereas lanosterol derivates are more abundant in B. rariflora. The microbiological tests shows for both plants an evident antibacterial activity against Gram(+) bacteria.

Non polar constituents of Stenomesson variegatum (R. et P.) Macbr.

Hydrocarbons, triterpenoids and sterols were determined in Stenomesson variegatum (R. et P.) Macbr. (Amaryllidaceae), a plant used in traditional peruvian medicine as an antiinflammatory. An unusual presence of odd hydrocarbons was found, whereas triterpenoidic and sterolic fractions are quite usual and simple.

Thyroxine effects on polyamine metabolism in rat cerebellum and brain cortex during postnatal development.

Polyamine content, ODC and SAMDC activities have been assayed in cerebellum and brain cortex of hyperthyroid rats during postnatal development. Daily thyroxine treatment induced ODC and SAMDC biosynthesis in early periods of postnatal life in both cerebellum and brain cortex. In addition, in comparison to controls an increase in spermidine and spermine content was shown to occur in hyperthyroid rats. A functional correlation between polyamine content and nucleic acids could explain a correlation between polyamine biosynthesis and morphofunctional maturative processes in the brain.

Effect of alpha IFN on unaggressive immunoproliferative disorders.

BACKGROUND: alpha-IFN is reported to be an effective treatment for a number of lymphoproliferative diseases. Little information is available at present on its effect in unaggressive immunoproliferative disorders. STUDY DESIGN AND RESULTS: In a prospective non randomized study, 57 patients with IgG or IgA MGUS, smouldering myeloma or stage I MM treated with alpha-IFN (3 MU 3 times a week for at least 6 months) were compared to 129 untreated similar patients. Four patients in the IFN group showed a monoclonal component reduction > 50% versus none in the control group, and 25% of patients suffered disease progression (MC increase > 50% and/or osteolytic lesions) in the IFN group as compared to 18% in the control group. CONCLUSIONS: alpha-IFN administration at the dose used is ineffective for the majority of patients with slowly proliferating immunoproliferative disorders; only a small subgroup of them may benefit from such a treatment.

Effects of in vitro polyamine treatment on LDH isoenzyme patterns in Yoshida sarcoma cells and in former macrophages.

LDH isoenzyme shifts are frequently observed in several malignant neoplasm when compared with the corresponding normal tissues. In the present work, we studied LDH isoenzyme behaviour both in Yoshida cells and in founder macrophages, before and after polyamine treatment. The choice of polyamine was prompted in that these polycations also act on the enzymatic and metabolic steps. Results obtained evidenced: i) LDH activity was higher in Yoshida cells than in macrophages; ii) polyamine treatment provoked in tumour cells a very strong increase of LDH activity whereas in macrophages only a slight decrease; iii) Yoshida cells showed the presence of 4 LDH isoenzymes only.

Cathechol-O-methyl transferase activity in the individual human platelet populations.

COMT activity is present in many animal tissues, but there is no evidence on the presence or the functional role of COMT activity in platelets. The present work reports the results obtained on COMT activity in the individual platelet populations separated by a discontinuous sucrose density gradient. In the young platelet populations the activity is remarkable higher than in the old and light populations. Low values of COMT activity in the old platelets may reflect platelet senescence.
