[Bleomycin in the treatment of squamous cell carcinoma of the penis and bladder].

Bleomycin is an antineoplastic antibiotic with special effects on squamous cell carcinomas. Penile carcinomas in early stages may be treated with good early results by Bleomycin alone. In contrast to the normal course of penile carcinomas late recurrences and metastases may develop even after an interval of more than seven years. Therefore the monotherapy with Bleomycin is no longer recommended. The effects of Bleomycin on squamous cell carcinomas of the bladder are disappointing. The new therapeutic approach with Bleomycin and hyperthermia of the bladder may give better results.

[Urinary cytology in office urology (author's transl)].

Urinary cytology is an effective method for the detection and control of urothelial tumors. The use of simple, fast staining and reliable techniques in the office for screening purposes may improve the early detection rate. A survey of simple microscopic and staining techniques is given. Prestained slides (Testsimplets and Sangodiff G) proved to be very suitable for office use. But the cytological analysis of the urinary sediment still needs a highly interested and trained examiner.

Carcinoma, Transitional Cell↗

[The acute scrotum (author's transl)].

The term "acute scrotum" is defined as an emergency which needs immediate therapeutic decisions. The etiology, symptoms, differential diagnosis and therapeutic principles are outlined, with emphasis on testicular- or spermaticcordtorsion.

Acute Disease↗

[The septic kidney: primary nephrectomy or conservative surgery? A clinical study of 110 cases (author's transl)].

The "Septic Kidney" usually originates from infected hydronephrosis. The clinical appearance is characterized by poor general condition, in particular shock, severe flank pain, high fever with chills, leucocytosis and often azotemia. The pathogenesis and definition are discussed on the basis of 110 cases. The various therapeutic modalities such as primary nephrectomy, conservative surgery or endoscopic instrumentation are compared and the indications defined. Conservative procedures are preferred over primary nephrectomy.

Grading of transitional cell tumours of the urinary tract by urinary cytology.

1122 cytological diagnoses have been made on 2500 Papanicolaou stained cytological slides from Patients with urothelial carcinomas. The cytological accuracy was 78% for G1 tumours, 94% for G2 and 96% for G3 carcinomas. A histologically diagnosed G1 carcinoma was cytologically G1 in 81% of cases, a G2 carcinoma was recognized in 64% and G3 carcinoma in 48%.

[TNM-system orientated radiological therapy in prostatic carcinoma (author's transl)].

The classification of prostatic cancer according to the TNM-system in contrast to the older staging systems results in a change in radiological therapy planing. The radiological techniques for the classification of N (lymphnodes) and M (metastases) are explained. Together with T (local tumore growth) these categories define the outline for the radiological therapy. The different radiation techniques are explained.

Bleomycin effects on malignant tumors of the male genitalia.

Bleomycin was applied alone or in combination with actinomycin D, vinblastine, radiation and/or surgery in cancer of the penis (6) and testis (6). In early stages of penile cancer (T2 N0 M0) a total response was noted. The failure in advanced stages is discussed. In terato-, embryonal- and choriocarcinomas of the testis (T2-4 N0-2 M0-1) remarkable responses of short and long duration were observed in all patients. The reasons for different biological action are discussed.

[Vesicoureterorenal reflux: an inherited disease? (author's transl)].

A family case history is presented with an increased incidence of vesicorenal reflux: four sons had a reflux while a daughter and the parents were healthy in this respect. From the literature and on own studies the possibility of reflux as an inherited disease is discussed. A new finding is the coincidence of reflux and the histocompatibility-antigen HLA-A2.
