Anterior segment ischemia following extraocular muscle surgery.

An experimental study was conducted on rhesus monkeys using the technique of anterior segment fluorescein angiography to determine the changes that occur in the iris circulation following surgery on extraocular recti muscles in various combinations and to investigate the safe time limit to perform further surgery on the remaining recti muscles. Based on the results, the probable blood supply to the iris and its clinical significance is discussed. It is concluded that the often quoted clinical safe period of 6 weeks is not enough from the angiographic point of view, as the iris circulation is not fully normalized by that time.

Gastric tuberculosis.

A 63-year-old female presented with upper epigastric pain. On endoscopy a giant gastric ulcer was observed on the lesser curvature of the stomach. Biopsies taken from the ulcer showed epitheloid cell granulomas with caseation, suggesting a diagnosis of granulomatous gastritis probably tubercular in origin. No AFB was seen in the biopsied material, the culture also failed to grow AFB. Radiograph of the chest was normal. On anti-tubercular treatment the patient showed remarkable recovery and the ulcer healed completely following 3 1/2 months of treatment.

Ocular motility in alternating squints: an electro-oculographic study.

Ocular movements were studied electro-oculographically in 10 normal subjects and 10 patients with alternating strabismus. Fixation and pursuit movements and to a less extent the saccadic movements were observed to be abnormal in patients with alternating strabismus. The defect in pursuit movements was shown to be statistically significant. There was no correlation between the extent of ocular motor abnormalities and the angle of deviation or the size of facultative suppression scotoma. The possible common pathological mechanism leading to the ocular motor abnormalities qualitatively similar to those reported earlier in strabismus and anisometropic amblyopes are discussed.

A quantitative morphological study of skeletal muscle in castrated goats.

The effects of castration on the morphological differences of the skeletal muscle were studied in male goats. The percent interfascicular area, fascicle size, percent fibre area, percent interfibre area, fibre cross-sectional area, fibre diameter and number of fibres per unit area were estimated for m. biceps femoris. Following castration (open method) there was a significant decrease in the number of muscle fibres per mm2, but the fascicular area, fibre area and fibre diameter were greater than those of entires (P less than 0.05). However, no such differences were observed in vasectomized goats.
