[Phenotypic and genotypic properties of 4 virulence plasmids of Salmonella typhimurium].

Virulence-associated plasmids pLT2, pIP1350, pIP1360 and pIP1370 coded for the fi+ character. These plasmids did not code for the synthesis of classical adhesins, aerobactin or colicins. Nor did they mediate resistance to the metals Hg, Te, As, Cd or flavomycin. Plasmids pLT2, pIP1350 and pIP1370 contained DNA sequences homologous to the incFIIA and incFIB replicons. Plasmid pIP1360 contained a single sequence homologous to incFIIA replicon.

[Epidemiology of Salmonella typhimurium biotype 6 strains, isolated in Belgium from 1969 to 1982].

Strains of S. typhimurium biotype 6 possess neither tetrathionate reductase nor arginine dihydrolase; they use trehalose, but not inositol and glycerol. Most are multi-resistant to antibiotics and are responsible for numerous outbreaks of salmonellosis. They have been divided into four groups. Groups I includes strains of phage type 207, and was predominant in Belgium from 1969 to 1976. Group II includes strains of a classical variety belonging to phage types 49, 193 and 204. Group III includes strains of the copenhagen variety belonging to the same phage types. Strains of groups II and III are generally resistant to trimethoprim. They have predominated in Belgium since 1978 (mainly phage type 193). Group IV contains a few strains of various phage types, generally non-resistant, which have caused no epidemics.

Bacteriophage Typing↗

[Selective citrate-adonitol medium for the isolation of various strains of Escherichia coli K99].

Simmons citrate agar supplemented with 0.2% adonitol (SCA medium) was used as a differential medium for some enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli: all strains with either a cryptic K99 antigen or a glucose-dependent K99 antigen and 70% of strains with a glucose-independent K99 antigen gave yellow colonies on SCA medium. Other faecal bacteria did not grow or else developed as blue colonies.

[Characterization of antibiotic resistance plasmids in 2 strains of Salmonella typhi isolated in Belgium].

Two strains of Salmonella typhi resistant to streptomycin, tetracycline, chloramphenicol and sulfonamides were studied. Conjugation and analysis of plasmid DNA suggested that in the two strains, these resistance characters were mediated by a single R plasmid. The plasmids of both strains belonged to the FI-incompatibility group, whereas that isolated from the resistant Mexican S. typhi belonged to incomtibility group H. Therefore, the two resistant S. typhi isolated in Belgium do not represent an extension of the H plasmid which was responsible for chloramphenicol resistance in S. typhi during the 1972 Mexican epidemic.

Anti-Bacterial Agents↗

[Rapid detection and identification of plasmids belonging to the H incompatibility group and infecting epidemic strains of "Salmonella typhi-murium" (author's transl)].

Among 150 strains of Salmonella of various serotypes and from different origins, 64 are resistant to K2TeO3 10(-4) M. In these strains Te resistance always coded by R plasmids which are members of the H incompatibility group. This type of plasmids are very easy to detect and to identify. We suggest that resistance to Te should be examined routinely for Salmonella.

Anti-Bacterial Agents↗

[Plasmids of incompatibility group H among multiresistant "Salmonella" (author's transl)].

A total of 449 multiresistant strains of Salmonella recently isolated from human beings and animals in France and in Belgium and belonging to 21 serotypes, were screened for the presence of IncH R plasmids. These plasmids were identified in 236 strains belonging to 14 different serotypes: mainly S. typhimurium, S. schwarzengrund and S. saint-paul, but not in S. dublin nor S. kedougou. The IncH R plasmids confer resistance to four or more drugs and to tellurium compounds. The properties of 14 plasmids were studied by genetic methods and agarose gel electrophoresis following digestion with EcoRI: they showed a great degree of relatedness.

[Characterization by zymograms of R factor-determined beta-lactamases: plasmids of defined and undefined compatibility groups (author's transl)].

An easy biochemical method is described, discriminating the beta-lacta-mases coded by various R factors. Electrophoretic mobility and substrate affinity of beta-lactamases were studied simultaneously for 7 different penicillins and cephalosporins. They are I like R factors assigned into different compatibility groups (N, P, com6, com7, com8, X and com 9), five R factors isolated from piglets faeces and one R factor, RU1, originated from Enterobacter aerogenes. Three electrophoretic types of beta-lactamases were determinated: 1) beta-lactamase which migrates towards the anode (enzyme coded by Bacillus cereus chromosome); 2) beta-lactamase of weak cathodic mobility (e. g. R6K); 3) beta-lactamase which migrates rapidly towards the cathode (e. g. R46, R71). Escherichia coli K12 strains synthesize a penicillinase of this third type, destroying penicillin G. The enzymatic and physicochemical properties are not modified by host bacteria, suggesting the possibility to study the plasmid in wild bacteria.
