[Computerized tomography in acetabular fractures].

The paper deals with sixteen cases of acetabular fractures studied with CT. After a short description of the normal CT findings, the different kind of fractures are reported. The usefulness of CT examination in evaluating acetabular fractures and their complications is confirmed both in conservative treatment and surgical approach.

[Role of computerized tomography in the TNM staging of laryngeal and hypopharyngeal neoplasms].

70 patients with squamous cell carcinoma of larynx and hypopharynx were examined by computed tomography; the TNM staging of tumors by CT, by endoscopy and by surgical operation was reviewed. CT proved to be reliable both to recognize the presence of neoplasms, with the exception of those very superficial, and their deep spreading to pre-epiglottic and para-laryngeal spaces, to the soft tissues of the neck and to the cartilages. Therefore CT is the examination of choice in laryngeal neoplasms staging, because it precisely completes the clinical and endoscopical informations.

The role of the substantia nigra on the rage reaction elicited by hypothalamic stimulation, in the cat.

The effects of substantia nigra stimulation on the rage reaction evoked by hypothalamic activation were studied. The reference value of the rage reaction was the latency of the hissing, which was constant in all animals when hypothalamic stimulation was performed with the same parameters. Simultaneous activation of substantia nigra and hypothalamus determined a significant decrease in hissing latency. The influence of the substantia nigra on the affective components of the aggressive behavior is underlined.

The control exerted by the substantia nigra on the quiet biting attack elicited by hypothalamic stimulation in the cat.

The effects of substantia nigra (SN) (pars compacta) stimulation on the quiet biting attack evoked by hypothalamic activation in the cat were studied. The measure of the aggressive behavior was the latency of the biting which did not greatly change from one animal to another when hypothalamic stimulation was performed with the same parameters. Concurrent activation of the SN determined an inhibitory effect on the studied behavior in the form of an increase in the biting latency or loss of the attack pattern. The inhibitory role of the SN on predatory attack behavior is discussed.

Monocyte mediated modulation of the antibody response in vitro.

Human peripheral blood monocytes (PBMC) were isolated by Ficoll-Hypaque density gradient and then fractionated by differential adhesion to plastic surface. Adherent cell-depleted PBMC, non-readherent fraction and firmly adherent fraction so obtained from PBMC, PBMC themselves and a mixture of the above cells, were then sensitized in vitro with sheep erythrocytes (SRBC) so as to produce a primary antigen-dependent, antigen-specific antibody response. It appears that adherent cell-depleted PBMC produce about twice as many haemolytic areas as compared to total PBMC (from 43 to 85). If depleted PBMC are co-cultured with firmly adherent or non-readherent cells, the number of haemolytic areas goes down to 19 or up to 102, respectively. Functional, histochemical, immunochemical and morphological data suggest that the inhibiting firmly adherent fraction is composed of typical phagocytizing cells, while the enhancing cells of the non-readherent fraction are similar to the dendritic cells described in human blood and some lymphoid organs, which do not exhibit active pinocytic activity, but are the principal accessory cells needed to stimulate lymphocyte responses.

[Induced facilitation in the ventral tegmentum area on the latency of biting evoked by hypothalamic stimulation in the cat].

The effects of VTA stimulation on the quiet biting attack evoked by hypothalamic activation in the cat, were studied. The reference value of the aggressive behaviour was the latency of the biting. Concurrent activation of both the hypothalamus and VTA determined a decrease of the biting latency, which depended on the parameters of VTA stimuli. The facilitatory effect of the dopaminergic mesolimbic system on the attack behaviour is emphasized.

[The substantia nigra in quiet attack induced by hypothalamic stimulation in the cat].

The role of the substantia nigra on the quiet biting attack evoked by hypothalamic stimulation was investigated. Simultaneous activation of the hypothalamus and of the s. nigra determined a significant increase of the biting latency or in some case the disappearance of the attack pattern. The inhibitory role of the s. nigra on the quiet biting attack evoked by hypothalamic stimulation is discussed.

Transient global amnesia.

30 patients aged between 45 and 78 years and who had suffered from transient global amnesia (TGA), were seen at the Department of Neurology, Pordenone Public Hospital, in the period 1978 to 1982. 25 patients had one or more risk factors for cerebrovascular disease, such as hypertension, cardiac abnormalities, diabetes and hyperlipidemia. EEG examination revealed abnormal activity only in 7 patients. Brain Computed Tomography showed cerebral atrophy in 10 and hypodense lesions in 3 patients. 16 patients had been followed up for a mean interval of 20 months. During the follow-up period, 4 patients had recurrent TGA and one had a transient ischemic attack in the vertebrobasilar arterial system. In the follow-up group, 15 patients showed permanent memory impairment. The high incidence of risk factors for cerebrovascular disease seems to confirm that TGA is probably due to transient cerebral ischemia. The high rate of permanent memory impairment, almost always connected with the coexistence of cerebrovascular risk factors, is not in agreement with the postulated good prognosis of TGA.

Congenital pulmonary steal phenomenon associated with tetralogy of Fallot, right aortic arch, and isolation of the left subclavian artery.

Isolation of the left subclavian artery has been reported in cases of tetralogy of Fallot with a right aortic arch. As the isolated left subclavian artery is supplied by the left vertebral artery (in which the blood flow direction is inverted), this anomaly is usually responsible for a congenital subclavian steal phenomenon. In our case the isolated left subclavian artery was connected by a patent ductus arteriosus to the main pulmonary artery. Therefore the left vertebral artery did not supply the distal left subclavian artery but supplied the main pulmonary artery (congenital pulmonary artery steal).

MR findings in Meige syndrome.

A 65-year-old woman was diagnosed clinically to have Meige syndrome in the oromandibular dystonic clinical variant of Marsden. On magnetic resonance imaging a reduced signal intensity in the head of the caudate nuclei, more prominent on the right, and in both putamina was shown.

[Comparative study with a closed sequential design between iopronic and iocetamic acid in oral cholecystocholangiography with radiograms in short and standard times. Laboratory evaluation of hepatic function (author's transl)].

In a comparative study with a closed sequential design iopronic acid has shown to have an opacification power in short times (3 to 4 hours after administration) much higher than iocetamic acid. The opacification of gall bladder and choledochus at 10 to 12 hours after administration has always resulted higher for iopronic acid. Laboratory examinations (total bilirubinaemia, SGOT, SGPT) have not shown any liver damaging effect due to the administered oral cholecystographic agent. Both contrast media, finally, have not caused side effects worth a particular remark at the dosage of 4.5 g.
