Effect of phosphatidylinositol-specific phospholipase C from Bacillus thuringiensis on solid spinocellular carcinoma.

Phosphatidylinositol-specific phospholipase C (PIPLC) from Bacillus thuringiensis (0.11 units per ml) inhibited growth of IC-Sofia carcinoma cell line in culture by 64%. The growth of transplanted carcinoma in hamsters was also inhibited by 29% at a dose of 4.9 units of PIPLC/kg animal/day. In addition, degeneration processes and a significant fibrosis of the tumour occurred. The functional, clinical, biochemical and haematological parameters studied were consistent with the established antitumour effect in vivo.

Treatment of spinal deformity in myelomeningocele: a retrospective study in four hospitals.

Correction of spinal deformities in patients with myelomeningoceles (mmc) is notoriously complicated. To identify the deformity, frequency, gravity and complications of treatment a retrospective study was carried out on 61 patients from four hospitals. 45 patients had neurological defect above L3 and were wheelchair-bound. The indications for surgery were progressive disturbance in sitting balance, pain and pressure sores. Two types of spinal deformity were identified; scoliosis (often thoraco-lumbar or double major curves) and kyphosis (usually angular and lumbar). The mean age at operation was 12 years 8 months (2y 6m-19y 7m). Several operative procedures were used; posterior, anterior and circumferential fusion, and resection of the kyphosis. 52 solid fusions were achieved with variable correction at the cost of many complications such as excessive blood loss (2), post-operative pressure sores (15), failure of instrumentation (15), deep infection (11), and death following a CSF leak (1). 4 patients died from unrelated causes. Only 16 patients had no complications. The type and severity of scoliosis and kyphosis, operative technique, results and complications were correlated to identify the risks and define the optimal surgical technique for each type of spinal deformity in mmc.

Isolation of Bhanja virus from ticks of the genus Haemaphysalis in southeast Bulgaria and presence of antibodies in pastured sheep.

Bhanja virus was isolated from ticks of the genus Haemaphysalis (H. punctata and H. sulcata) collected from sheep pastured in the surroundings of Akhtopol in southeast Bulgaria, and simultaneously blood sera of 58 sheep were investigated in plaque-reduction neutralization test with B lranja arbovirus. All sera contained antibodies to this virus in titres from 1:32 to 1:4096 (geometrical mean titre 1:494). The district of Akhtopol proved to be a natural focus of Bhanja virus.

[Morphologic studies for quantifying arteriosclerosis].

After application of a semisynthetic diet enriched with 0.5% cholesterol, hypercholesterolemia was produced in nine New Zealand rabbits. After 92 days the aortas were divided into 10 segments and analyzed using morphological methods. We used a computer-assisted morphometric method that was developed for measuring arteriosclerotic lesions of the vessel wall (length and area of plaques) within single aortic segments. We observed a proximo-distal segmental pattern of arteriosclerotic lesions of the aortic wall. The highest extent of atherosclerosis was found in the aortic arch, decreasing in extent in thoracal and abdominal regions. Our results show that segmental measurements of the aorta are necessary to analyze the extent of atherosclerosis reproducibly.
