Augmented auditory information in the control of upper-limb prostheses.

The present study compared the effects of augmented auditory information on the linear positioning performance of individuals with natural or prosthetic limbs. Subjects were ten male volunteers, five of whom had above-elbow amputations and had used their prosthetic devices for an average of 8.3 years. The other five subjects were selected from a volunteer pool. Movements were made and measured on a standard linear slide whose cursor had a pulsing infrared diode attached opposite the subject. An infrared camera and microprocessor translated diode movement into a corresponding change in voltage. The voltage was simultaneously applied to an audio device which supplied the augmented feedback. The movement of the cursor by the subject was paralleled by a linearly-related change in audible frequency (Hz). The subjects performed 15 trials at each of three retentions (immediate, 15-sec filled, and 15 sec unfilled), both with and without the augmented feedback, for a total of 90 trials. The results of group X feedback X retention intervals analysis of variance on absolute and variable error indicated both a group X retention and a group X feedback interaction. Subjects using a prosthetic limb to produce the movement were less accurate and more variable than the "normal" subjects when augmented feedback was not concurrent with response.

Sequential ventricular fluid concentrations of ceftazidime--report of three cases.

Three adult subjects, each with a ventriculostomy, received ceftazidime 2g iv q8h for three doses. Serial samples of serum and CSF ventricular fluid were obtained following the third dose; ceftazidime concentrations were measured by high pressure liquid chromatography. In one patient without inflammatory cells in the CSF, ceftazidime CSF concentrations were only approximately 0.3 micrograms/ml. In two other patients who had inflammatory cells and blood in the CSF, concentrations of ceftazidime in ventricular fluid demonstrated a slow rise and decline over an eight-hour period. Although contamination of the CSF by blood in these two patients confounds the interpretation of the concentrations achieved, it is concluded that obtaining serial samples of CSF from a ventriculostomy offers a more realistic appraisal of the dynamics of antibiotic penetration compared with the single-point method.

Long term pressure recordings under the ischial tuberosities of tetraplegics.

Five ulcer free tetraplegic subjects who are unable to do lift-offs were studied on four separate days on two types of wheelchair cushions to measure the pressures underneath the ischial tuberosities. Small electrical pressure transducers and a tape-recorder were utilised. The average pressures on the ROHO and foam cushions were 71.5 and 105.4 mmHg respectively. The average time between push-ups greater than 1 second and greater than 5 seconds was 72.1 and 96.2 minutes. The average pressures and the time between push-ups was greatly in excess of the usually suggested skin care regime. The data would suggest that the relative importance of pressure and pressure relief in the aetiology of decubitus ulcers should be re-examined.
