[Determination of placental protein 12 (insulin-like growth factor binding protein 25) in pleural effusion of various origins].

It is reported on the possible role of the radioimmunological estimation of placental protein 12 (PP 12; insulin-like growth factor binding protein 25, IGF-BP 25) in pleural effusions of patients with lung cancer, with pleural carcinosis of extrathoracal carcinomas and benign pleural diseases, respectively. There are more PP 12, IGF-BP 25-positive cases at benign diseases than at carcinomas at all. It is discussed the possible importance of PP 12, IGF-BP 25 as a binding protein of growth factor s IGF-I and -II. The clinical validity should be analysed in more detail on the basis of the estimation of more patients.

[Peak flow measurement].

Peak flow rate measurements with a simple device are useful in detecting and objective assessment of obstructive airway disease. They are easy to perform and offer a rational basis for antiobstructive treatment.

[Results of nutrition diagnostic studies in patients with bronchial cancer].

A group of 71 patients with bronchial carcinomas are submitted to nutritional assessment in this trial. A 6-point valuation scan from Schmoz et al. for the nutritional assessment is used. Especially the results of protein assessment and the skin tests with 4 recall antigens are worked out. These results are compared with reference ranges. In the pathological values, both the protein assessment and the skin tests are classified in 3 interference degrees. In the following interpretation, the group of patients are subdivided in one group, which undergoes conservative therapy (26 patients) and a second one, which is treated operationally (45 patients). The results showed that more than half of the patients had disturbed nutrition indices, more than 2/3 showed disturbed protein status and more than 90% of the patients showed pathological results in the skin tests.

Clinical evidence of secretory IgA and Schwangerschaftsprotein 1 in pleural effusions of lung cancer patients.

Secretory immunoglobulin A, alpha 1-fetoprotein, orosomucoid and alpha 2-macroglobulin have been estimated in pleural effusions of 11 lung cancer patients. Secretory immunoglobulin could be detected in all cancer patients except one with a secondary embolism. Levels could be found between 0.19 and 0.73 g/l. No SIgA could be detected in a control group of 7 patients with pleural effusions of other origin.

[Reference values for the maximal expiratory flow volume curve for adults. Results of a cooperative study].

Reference values of the maximal expiratory flow-volume curve for the adult GDR's population have been ascertained by a co-operative study of 5 lung function laboratories. We analysed measurements in 1,004 healthy subjects aged 16 to 69 years (728 males and 276 females). Prediction equations for the maximal expiratory flow rates, several time constants of lung mechanics and screening parameters of ventilatory inhomogeneity have been calculated by means of the multiple linear regression analysis. Our reference values are in good accordance with SEPCR summary equations. It is recommended to subtract from or add to the predicted values 1.64 standard deviations and to consider abnormal all values beyond this limit.

[Airway resistance in dialysis patients].

The oscillatory resistance to respiration ROS is not significantly influenced by the process of dialysis and thus does not allow a conclusion to a possible predialytic increase of the extravascular pulmonary water. The body-plethysmographically determined resistance of the respiratory tract Rt shows homogeneous behaviour. A functionally intact respiratory system is of vital importance for the patient with renal insufficiency.

[Levels of tumor markers (orosomucoid, pregnancy-associated alpha 2-glycoprotein, pregnancy protein-1, placental specific-tissue protein 10, placental specific-tissue protein 12, alpha 1-fetoprotein) in the serum of patients with bronchial carcinoma].

Concentration of orosomucoid, pregnancy associated alpha 2-glycoprotein (alpha 2-PAG), Schwangerschaftsprotein 1 (SP1), placental specific-tissue protein 10 (PP10), placental specific-tissue protein 12 (PP12), alpha 1-Fetoprotein (AFP) were estimated in serum samples of 83 patients with lung cancer of stages II-IV. The proteins were determined by means of the single radial immunodiffusion, the rocket immunoelectrophoresis, the radioimmunoassay and the enzymeimmunoassay. Orosomucoid, PP12 and AFP serum concentrations of the cancer group compared with those of the control group, were increased significantly. Orosomucoid (control group: means = 0.828 g/l; s = 0.301; tumour group: mean = 2.16 g/l; s = 0.862); PP12 (control group: mean = 54.08 micrograms/l; s = 61.70; tumour group: mean = 122.52 micrograms/l; s = 131.16); AFP (control group: mean = 3.05 micrograms/l; s = 3.76; Tumour group: means = 8.29 micrograms/l; s = 17.75). alpha 2-PAG was found only in 37 cases of the tumour group; SP1 in 22 cases. PP10 (control group: mean = 2.25 micrograms/l; s = 0.866; tumour group: mean = 2.503 micrograms/l, s = 1.508). On condition that 2 tested parameters at least were estimated in the pathological range the sensitivity amounted to 0.64 and the specificity to 0.92.

[Aspects of tuberculosis control in the Republic of Nicaragua].

UNLABELLED: In the years of Somoza-dictatorship the number of cases with tuberculosis important by increased and the fight against tuberculosis was not efficacious. After the revolutionary triumph under direction of the Sandinista National Liberation Front on 19. July 1979 control of tuberculosis was founded with following main points: BCG-vaccination, detection of patients with smear-positive tuberculosis, bacteriological supervision of chemotherapy and examination of contact persons. Annual risk of infection is actual more than 1%. In the present time USA-administration violates permanently national sovereignty of Nicaragua with disadvantage for control of tuberculosis. CONCLUSION: Supports and peace for the Republic of Nicaragua.

[Tumor markers (alpha 2-macroglobulin, secretory immunoglobulin A, pregnancy-associated alpha 2-glycoprotein) in the serum of patients with bronchial carcinoma].

Concentration of alpha 2-macroglobulin (AMG), pregnancy associated-alpha 2-glycoprotein (alpha 2-PAG, PZ) secretory immunoglobulin A (S-IgA), pregnancy specific-beta 1-glycoprotein (SP1) and immunoglobulin E (IgE) were estimated in serum samples of 88 patients with lung cancer of stages, II-IV. The proteins were determined by means of the single radial immunodiffusion and the rocket immunoelectrophoresis. AMG and S-IgA serum concentrations of the cancer group compared with those of the control group, were increased significantly. AMG (control group: means = 1,43 g/l; s = 0,999; tumor group: means = 4,37 g/l; s = 1,758); S-IgA (control group: means = 37 mg/l; s = 16,6; tumor group: means = 48 mg/l; s = 24,2). PZ was found only in 52% of the patients with lung cancer by means of the rocket immunoelectrophoresis. The difference between the tumour and the control group was not significant. IgE could be detected only in one case with lung cancer (IgE = 2950 IU/ml). It was not possible to detect SP1 by means of the single radial immunodiffusion in serum samples of lung cancer patients.

[Reference values for the inhomogeneity parameter V2/V1].

In 1,169 healthy subjects (821 males and 348 females) aged 15 to 70 years was determined parameter V2/V1 from the flow-volume loop for the estimation of unequal ventilation by means of the electronic spirometer Pneumotest. Reference values and prediction equations for parameter V2/V1 are reported.
