A hand-held noncontact tonometer (Pulsair, Keeler Ltd., UK) was tested in 42 children, from 5 months to 12 years of age. At least 1 intraocular pressure (IOP) reading was obtained in all of the 84 eyes studied, whereas with a Goldman applanation tonometer measurements could be obtained in only 26 eyes (14 subjects). Time required for examination with the Pulsair was quite variable and related to age (p less than 0.0001). Compliance in children was reported as "good" in the majority of cases; it was also age-related (p less than 0.005). Although its reliability could not be definitely evaluated, the results of this study indicate that this instrument may be a valuable choice for screening and follow-up purposes in childhood.

Specular microscopy of the in vivo corneal endothelium of 214 clinically normal eyes in children ranging from 5 to 14 years of age showed a regular mosaic of hexagonal cells. The cell population density of individuals presented some variation, as it doses in older subjects. Quantitative analysis permitted us to determine the normal range of the endothelial cell count at each age. The mean (+/- SD) value ranged from 3591 +/- 399 cells per square millimeter at age 5 years to 2697 +/- 246 cells per square millimeter for the oldest subjects. Our data show a rapid decrease in cell density up to age 10 years. We estimate from our data a decrease in cell density of 13% between ages 5 and 7 years and an additional decrease of 12% by age 10 years.

A new syndrome of congenital cataract, hearing loss, hypercholesterolemia, spasticity of the lower extremities, and perhaps mental retardation, is described. Manifestation in two brothers with no other affected family members suggests an autosomal recessive pattern of inheritance. A discussion of the differential diagnosis of oculo-auditory syndromes is presented.
The authors describe a case of trisomy 4q with a unilateral morning glory disc anomaly, a previously unreported ocular manifestation. Previous ocular involvements are summarized.
The pathogenesis of diabetic retinopathy (DR) consists of a complex patch-work of factors correlated and independent on one another at the same time. It is therefore difficult to find pharmaceuticals able to produce different, or even mutually contrasting effects. Another difficulty are the intrinsic characteristics of the disease which after developing to a "critical" stage, evolves with independent mechanism to the most advanced stages. In spite of that, a great deal of medicaments has been suggested so far, all providing therapeutical logic to interfere with one or more pathogenetical stages of the lesions. Although several clinical trials have been performed, survey and follow-up are still limited and insufficient to draw conclusion on the effectiveness of medical therapy. In recent times new types of medicaments such as aldose-reductase inhibitors and carbonic anhydrase-inhibitors have been suggested. The preliminary results present encouraging perspectives for their use, although caution, until long-term results are available with greater surveys and longer follow-up periods, is advised.
Forty-eight children aged from 4 to 11 months, affected by Congenital Nasolacrimal Duct Obstruction (CNDO), treated successfully by local hydrostatic massage, were retrospectively included in two groups: Group A treated by massage and antibiotic eye drops, Group B treated by massage only. The comparison shows a quicker resolution of the CNDO when antibiotic eye drops are administered. The Author stresses the utility of topical antibiotic therapy regardless of the presence of mucopurulent discharge.
We used a Hertel exophthalmometer to measure the degree of ocular protrusion in 852 subjects who had no history of orbital trauma or disease, endocrine disease, severe myopia, buphthalmos, or craniofacial deformities. The subjects ranged in age from 3 to 10 years. No statistically significant difference was observed between boys and girls or between right and left eyes in each age group. The mean normal protrusion values ranged from 9.11 mm in the 3-year-old group to 11.67 mm in the 10-year-old group. The mean outer orbital margin distance ranged from 78.7 mm in the 3-year-old group to 89.1 mm in the 10-year-old group. The data obtained were tabulated to plot percentile distribution curves of normal exophthalmometric values and outer orbital margin distance in children. No subject had more than 2 mm of asymmetry between the eyes.

The comparative efficiency of sonography and computerised axial tomography on the diagnosis of retinoblastoma was assessed in 8 consecutive cases. Ocular echography revealed a 100% sensitivity whereas CT scans gave false negatives in 2 out of the 8 cases (80% sensitivity). The value of ultrasound scanning as the diagnostic test of first choice for suspected retinoblastoma is therefore emphasised.
