[Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) in women during pregnancy].

Four women with SSPE during pregnancy were observed. The influence of pregnancy on the course of illness was in all patients unfavourable: the disease exacerbated, what could be explained by physiological immunosuppression connected with gestation. Delivery (in three cases by sectio caesarea) had no beneficial influence on the fatal course of SSPE. In two cases intrauterine necrosis of foetus took place in the 8th and 20th week from the beginning of SSPE. In other two cases healthy children were born. One of them does not exhibit any neurological abnormalities during the first 5 years of life.

[Risk factors of leukemic infiltration in patients with acute myeloblastic leukemia].

On the basis of clinical neuropathological evaluation of 48 patients with acute myeloblastic leukaemias the authors analyse the risk factors of leukemic infiltrations developing in the brain. The investigations revealed that the distinct dissemination of leukemic cells in blood is the most important risk factor of such infiltrations. The risk increases significantly in older patients. Survival time and maintenance of high leukocytosis do not intensify the risk of leukemic infiltrations in the brain.

[Atrophy of the granular layer of the cerebellar cortex in patients with nonlymphoblastic leukemia treated with cytosine arabinoside].

The reported analysis comprised 81 patients dying of acute non-lymphoblastic leukaemia type M1, M2, M4 and blastic crises in chronic myelocytic leukaemia. It was observed that the number of cases of cerebellar granular layer atrophy rose markedly in the years 1984-1990 as compared with 1976-1983 (45.4% vs 16.2%). It is suggested that this was due to the introduction of cytostatic treatment schedules with higher doses of cytosine arabinoside (ARAC), especially TAD (6-thioguanine, ARAC, daunorubicin). Cerebellar granular layer atrophy seems to be dependent rather on the cumulative dose of ARAC and not on a single high dose of that drug.

[Unusual clinical course in a case of carcinomatosis of cerebrospinal meninges].

The authors report the clinical course of a case of carcinomatosis of the cerebrospinal meninges with frequent sudden rises of intracranial pressure and with lethal outcome. The primary tumour was a mucinous carcinoma of the ovary. In treatment Pudenz valve was used successfully for connecting the subarachnoid space of the spinal cord with the peritoneal cavity. This shunting of the cerebrospinal fluid caused no dissemination of the neoplasm within the peritoneal cavity.

[Lateral geniculate bodies in humans--analysis of development].

Macroscopial and microscopial analysis of development of the lateral geniculate bodies was performed in 32 human brains of persons of various age. Their presence was revealed in all the cases. Observation of the histopahtological specimen showed---in contradistinction to the results of experimental animal investigations found in the world's literature--a lack of influence of the light stimulus on the stratification of structure of the lateral geniculate body in humans.

[Neoplastic encephalopathy in the light of 2 observed cases].

The authors report two cases of neoplastic encephalopathy. In one patient with oviduct carcinoma it had the form of cerebellopathy. In the other case of renal carcinoma it appeared as encephalopathy with a nearly exclusive involvement of cerebral hemispheres. The reaction of microglia, lymphocytes and diffuse demyelination found in these cases are regarded by the authors as a result of autoimmunization in the course of malignant neoplasm. Attention is called to the importance of axial computer tomography in the intravital diagnosis of this encephalopathy.
