Forty-three liver biopsies histologically diagnosed as Indian childhood cirrhosis were studied with the object of investigating accumulation of copper and copper-associated protein in the hepatocytes as demonstrated by the rhodanine and orcein stains respectively. The findings reveal that, in almost all cases, there was an increased accumulation of copper and copper-associated protein, accompanied by the presence of numerous Mallory bodies. It is postulated that the accumulation of copper in the hepatocytes might be the result of a metabolic defect and might be aetiologically related to the liver cell injury and the subsequent development of Indian childhood cirrhosis.

The allergenic significance of some fungi prevailing in the respiratory tract of allergy patients was studied. The percentage of markedly positive intradermal reactions observed was higher in patients to the extracts of homologous fungi found in their respiratory passages as compared to the patients who did not show the same fungi in theri respiratory tact.

The translocation of ATP from the inside to the outside of the mitochondrial membrane has been studied in a male sterile (2219 A) and a male fertile (2219 B) line of sorghum. The translocation of ATP was found to be substantially lower in case of mitochondria from the male sterile line. The affinity of adenine nucleotides to the translocator proteins of the mitochondrial membrane was found to be almost one half in case of 2219 A as compared to 2219 B when the Km for ATP-ADP was determined by two different assays. It is proposed that the inadequate supply of ATP in the cytosol resulting from its inefficient translocation may contribute to the male sterility in this line.
