Responding to the need for faculty development: a survey of U.S. and Canadian dental schools.

The Office of Professional Development at The University of Texas-Houston Health Science Center Dental Branch was established in November 1996 in order to meet the professional development needs of the faculty, staff, and administration. Although other dental schools share similar needs, our research revealed no study to determine how dental schools managed their faculty development needs. Therefore, a preliminary survey to collect data about offices similar to ours was developed and sent to the deans of fifty-four U.S. schools including Puerto Rico and ten Canadian schools. Thirty-seven schools (58 percent) responded, and it was determined that five schools (14 percent) had Offices of Professional Development and seven (19 percent) had Offices of Faculty Affairs. Based on these results, an expanded follow-up survey was conducted. The respondents were asked to indicate 1) which entity within the school was primarily responsible for handling faculty development, and 2) which entity actually sponsored each of eighteen faculty development activities. With a response from thirty-three U.S. schools (61 percent) and six Canadian schools (60 percent), six administrative structures (models) for faculty development were identified: 1) Office of Academic Affairs, 2) Departmental Chair, 3) a Faculty Development Committee, 4) an Office of the Dean, 5) an Office of Faculty/Professional Development, and 6) Other Resources.

Developing and evaluating a cancer prevention teaching module for secondary education: Project SAFETY (Sun Awareness for Educating Today's Youth).

The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center (UTMDACC) is concerned with the meteoric rise in incidence of melanoma. As few as three episodes of blistering sunburns before age 20 increases two to three times an individual's risk for developing this malignancy. These statistics have compelled the UTMDACC to develop a comprehensive prevention program on skin cancer directed specifically to our youth. It is designed to be incorporated into the high school biology curriculum and is composed of three 50-minute teaching programs bound together with common themes, visuals, and treatment styles. The incorporation of prevention practices limiting damaging exposure to ultraviolet irradiation would significantly impact the future incidence of skin cancer in these individuals.

An interactive case study assessment. Nursing care of the cancer patient with compromised immunity: practicum cases.

This demonstration will present an interactive videodisc (IVD) case study assessment of nursing care of the immunocompromised cancer patient. This module is the third part of a series of instructional IVD programs entitled Nursing Care of the Cancer Patient with Compromised Immunity. The series has been developed to provide education for fourth year nursing students, experienced nurses new to the field of oncology nursing, and for continuing education. The series has been developed to run on an InfoWindow platform and can also run on an M-Motion system. The demonstration will cover the rationale, treatment, content, and instructional strategies used in the module. The technology including the development platform and authoring environment will also be presented.

Corporate connections.

Mutually beneficial connections can be made between academic institutions and industry to meet respective goals and objectives. The University of Texas System Cancer Center cooperated with a major oil company to form such a connection. The link provided the center with funds to produce videotaped cancer detection and prevention modules for employees of the company. This connection and others like it may prove essential to the future well being of biomedical communication units.
